I believe a technique used today is a shredder into an acid bath that dissolves the paper. Read that in a Tom Clancey/Jason Borne novel.

They are probably burning their proof that they have bought US politicians, lobbyists, and aids so that those people know that they do not have to cut any deals with prosecutors.
