A Third of Florida Counties Have Less Than 10 ICU Beds Left Amid COVID-19 Surge
Newsweek ^ | 07/17/2020 | Soo Kim

As novel coronavirus cases in Florida continue to soar, 49 hospitals across the state have reached full intensive care unit (ICU) bed capacity. That's according to the latest report from Florida's Agency For Health Care Administration.

The ICUs in at least three Florida counties—Nassau, Okeechobee and Putnam—were said to have reached full bed capacity.

A total of 971 ICU beds were reported to be available across the state, nearly 16 percent of the state's total number of ICU beds, as of Thursday.

More than a third (23) of Florida's 67 counties were reported to have less than 10 ICU beds available.

Eight hospitals in Miami-Dade, the state's most populous county, were reported to have hit full ICU bed capacity, with only around 15 percent of their total ICU beds available.

Hospitalizations in Florida have reached at least 19,334, according to the latest report from the Florida Department of Health.

Earlier this week, daily new cases in Florida, whose residents form about seven percent of the total U.S. population, were reported to make up nearly 25 percent of the country's total daily case count.

Over a quarter of the state's total cases are in Miami-Dade County, which has seen 72,317 confirmed infections to date.

The number of active cases in Florida began to rise on a sharper incline from about mid-June. Several reopened bars in Florida were closed again after customers tested positive for the virus.

If this were really a problem DeSantis would have asked Trump to send the Corps of Engineers or a hospital ship.

ICU beds are expensive.

Don’t most hospitals try to run lean anymore?

And who are in these? Due to WuFlu or while WuFlu?

I’d also like to see WHO is actually in those beds. Someone needs help, they need help. I get that.

But, I wonder how many members of the homeless population are in those beds because of The ‘Rona.

Folks are talking about the death rate climbing in Texas. Is that because US citizens are dying because of The ‘Rona? Or, is it because Mexicans and others from South of the Border are coming into this country in advanced stages of who knows what they have, in addition to The ‘Rona and are flooding South Texas hospitals? A caller to Limbaugh’s show, the other day, talked about how they are coming over the border and being put on LifeFlight for treatment elsewhere, since those small hospitals don’t have the capacity to help.

Of the 67 counties in Florida there are 20 counties who have fewer than 10 ICU beds.

I am talking about beds, not beds available.

Wife is a ICU nurse. Her take on it;
1. Patients are finally coming to the hospital with normal illnesses and some are by now quite sick and go directly to the ICU.

2. ICUs are the most expensive beds to build and staff so hospitals have as few as possible. Even in normal times ICUs are running near capacity.

3. Most of the media's coverage of COVID is cherry picking stats to scare people.

Not due to the virus; due to postponed surgeries.

Bingo! And Trump need to start calling them out on this daily. Really disappointed in Pence and how he totally lost control of the messaging on this.

This is nothing but propaganda. Hospital administrators converted wards to COVID19 only to convert them back months later because they got one or two patients at most.

The hospital boards won't recreate the COVID19 wards since they lost a fortune from canceled "elective" treatments.

Many hospitals furloughed nurses doctors and other staff to flatten the curve and focused primarily on Covid patients and life saving

That means there is a staff reduction

Hospitals have “Staffed Capacity”

Political enemies of POTUS appear to be deliberately spreading COVID-19 in key election states.

I think it's been deliberately spread since the beginning. Maybe before the beginning. I have no strong evidence, but I think more will come out, probably after the election.

OK so overall they have about 14% available ICU beds in FL. What is normal?

I had an ER doc tell me that normal for the state is 75% - 80% of ICU beds occupied. Florida is a seasonal economy so I don't know how that might impact ICU occupancy. Many residents had to wait 5-6 weeks for surgeries and procedures that they really needed to have done. That has to be one reason for the increase.

Rural counties don’t have many hospitals or hospital beds, much less ICUs. This is another Panic Porn story.

Hospitals are a BIDNESS and like any these days they run lean. They are equipped to rapidly ramp-up new ICU beds if need be, but don’t want the cost of maintaining them full-time.
