Dr. Fauci warns young people of Covid-19 risks and says crisis could match 1918 flu; Infectious disease expert says young people socializing are ‘inadvertently part of the problem’

Top US public health expert Anthony Fauci warned on Tuesday that the global coronavirus outbreak could be as bad as the 1918 flu pandemic, calling that catastrophe “the mother of all pandemics”, which killed more than 50 million people worldwide.

Facing increasing attacks from Donald Trump and White House officials, Fauci spoke to Georgetown University students in Washington on Tuesday about the coronavirus pandemic and its risks to young people.

“We have a serious situation here in the United States,” Fauci, director of the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Disease, said at the online event.

The US has so far witnessed more than 3.4m cases of Covid-19 and more than 136,000 deaths, with cases now rising in 37 states; record numbers of new cases in Florida, Arizona and Texas; and California shutting down many businesses statewide after recent reopenings.

Fauci warned students at Georgetown that young people must not be “part of the problem”.

“There is an understandable situation where a young person could say, ‘You know, statistically the chances of my getting into trouble by getting infected are much smaller than an elderly person,’” he said.

Many young people, he said, might feel they would “rather be there sipping a margarita in a crowd”, but “to get it under control means you don’t let yourself get infected, and you don’t spread to anybody else”, Fauci said.

He added: “I say that with some trepidation, because I’m not blaming anyone, and I think people do this innocently. They don’t mean to be part of the problem, but inadvertently they are part of the problem.”

It was another instance of the senior public health official, who has been barred from major media appearances in recent weeks, finding other ways to address the public.

Fauci talk from February, the opposite of March, the oppostie of April, the opposite of May, the opposite of June, and now more in July. I think Fauci’s quote above referred to himself.

When all this blows over there needs to be a presidential commission that reviews the progress of the Pandemic with yard posts about what could ‘reasonably’ been known at each stage of the Pandemic. Fauci’s constantly shifting narratives would be called out as non-scientific speculation and he should be laughed out of academia. Governors Cuomo and Wolf’s reputations would be permanently damaged due to their orders forcing assisted living centers to re-admit sick residents. Even President Trump might come in for some criticism, though his instincts about this have been better than most.

the only herd immunity FauXi believes in is vaccine herd immunity. can’t allow people to develop it naturally before a vaccine is ready?

10 Jan 2020: Henry Ford Health System: Herd Immunity: Another Reason To Get A Flu Shot
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as many as 647,000 people were hospitalized and 61,000 died from flu complications during the 2018-2019 season. And this year’s flu season is already on track to be a severe one...

The good news: With a flu shot, people who are young, fit and healthy can help protect people in these high-risk groups from the flu through something called “herd immunity.” The more people are vaccinated, the less likely it is for the contagious disease to be transmitted to others. Ultimately, it decreases how common flu cases are among the population (aka our “herd”).
“If you give someone a vaccine, it not only helps prevent that person from getting the flu, but it also helps prevent them from giving the flu to someone else,” explains Andrea Smith, D.O., a family medicine specialist at Henry Ford Health System. “That’s herd immunity.”...

15 Nov 2019: NBC: Flu season 2019 is here. Vaccinate to maintain herd immunity — and protect everyone

Our best chance at keeping everyone healthy this winter season is to strengthen our community immunity — or herd immunity — by ensuring that as many people as possible are vaccinated...

lengthy intro; Creighton begins about 4mins in. worth hearing every word he speaks:

VIDEO: 13m: 14 Jul: Sky News Australia: The ‘damage is not being told’ of political fear-mongering on coronavirus
Presenter: Alan Jones
If Australia has only dozens of people in hospital and in intensive care across the country due to coronavirus, “how the hell is this a pandemic” says Sky News host Alan Jones.
Mr Jones said there are “things government won’t tell” the Australia public on the issue of COVID-19.
“The one story we are not being told is what damage has been done and is being done by the fear-mongering of political leaders, whose first instinct is to frighten us,” he said.
“The second instinct is to exercise complete control over us, via shutdowns or lockdowns”.
He said political leaders only listen to the experts “which suit them” and not the others who warned of the implications of the social, economic and public health consequences of widespread lockdowns.
“Politicians are too arrogant to listen”.

Mr Jones spoke of the widespread economic ramifications of the government-imposed coronavirus lockdowns with the Australian’s economic editor Adam Creighton.
Mr Creighton said the “reality is this disease is far, far less dangerous than was first thought”.
“But ministers are not saying that”.
He also said elements of the media have not reported the deaths and cases “in context” which has subsequently “scared the daylights out of people”.

Fauci paid to have the deadlier and more contagious coronavirus developed at the Wuhan lab.

That is a fact.

For Fauci to be treated as a hero who is advising the world about dealing with the deadlier and more contagious coronavirus is disgusting.

I keep waiting to hear the “science” Fauci is referring to — in defense of all his fear-mongering, but I never see anything but allusions to the 1918 Spanish flu, or the models that project millions of death if we all don’t stop living immediately — and don’t come out of our coffins forever.

There are some great scientist/doctors around but these CNN types are only interviewing those who support their doomsday scenarios unless we now obey the Media — unquestioningly, including how we vote in 2020 — unlike the humiliation they endured in 2016 when 95% of the editorial endorsements were disobeyed.

Really, these people need to go out and get real jobs — instead of pretending to be very important people — who should be doing all the thinking for everybody else. We no longer live in that world — of their personal ambitions. Fauci would be a big hit at the nursing homes — just like CNN.

Many here have labeled me a Fearper, but I do agree Fauci is out of line.

Fwiw here is my view:

—The death rate for young people is very low—that is a fact—and Fauci has no business comparing it to the 1918 Flu which devastated young people.

—The lockdowns are overkill for that reason.

—That said, this is _not_ a nothingburger like many Freepers seem to believe.

—There are studies that indicate that, unlike the flu, this virus can cause lasting significant damage to the heart and lungs for anyone who gets it—not a good thing—you really don’t want to get this virus if you can avoid it. The damage won’t kill you, but it might be enough to keep you from participating in your favorite outdoor hobbies or sports.

—There are also indications that herd immunity will not be possible since the antibodies don’t stick around for very long—it looks like no more than a few months for most people.

—That also means a vaccine is unlikely.

While many politicians are over-reacting, and Freepers are correct in calling them out on it, it is also a mistake to take this virus too lightly.

You really do not want to get this thing.
