(CNN)New York City is painting a Black Lives Matter mural on the street directly outside of Trump Tower in Midtown Manhattan.
City employees began painting a stretch of Fifth Avenue, just in front of the Trump Organization's headquarters, on Thursday morning. Mayor Bill de Blasio authorized the stark yellow mural earlier this month.
The New York mayor rolled up his sleeves and painted a bit of the mural, too, clad in a mask and flanked by civil rights leader, the Rev. Al Sharpton.
"President Trump said we would be denigrating the luxury of Fifth Avenue. Let me tell you: we're not denigrating anything, we are liberating Fifth Avenue, we are uplifting Fifth Avenue," de Blasio said on Thursday in response to Trump's tweet last week criticizing de Blasio for "denigrating" the area.
He added, "Who built this city, who built this nation, and never got the acknowledgement, the recognition..." "When we say 'Black Lives Matter' there is no more American statement, there's no more patriotic statement, because there is no America without Black America. We are acknowledging the truth in ourselves and in America.
By saying 'Black lives matter' we are righting a wrong," de Blasio said.

This should be illegal — The City is defacing the street in a political stunt.
They should have a scoreboard there where they can post the daily death count.
And the police will be investigating that as a hate crime or something just like the idiots in Vancouver with the tire skid marks on an LGBT crosswalk.

I would think it is illegal for a government entity to pay government employees to make a political statement of any kind.

100 dollars to the first person to take their street legal drag car and run a long black strip right down the center of the lettering.
We lost these parts of the country a long time ago; they’re just making it official. My working class town and others around Newark NJ still have our Columbus statues, and nobody is painting BLM nonsense anywhere, There is some virtue-signaling a bit to the west (wealthier area), but I suspect that is to divert attention from the fact that they don’t allow black people in their towns.
