Native American groups ask NFL to force Redskins name change

WASHINGTON (AP) — More than a dozen Native American leaders and organizations sent a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Monday calling for the league to force Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder to change the team name immediately.

The letter was signed by 15 Native American advocates and obtained by The Associated Press. It demands the team and the NFL cease the use of Native American names, imagery and logos — with specific importance put on Washington, which last week launched a “ thorough review ” of its name.

The letter was delivered on the same day that President Donald Trump voiced his opposition to any name change by the team. Several team sponsors have come out in favor of change recently and Snyder showed his first indication of willingness to do so amid a nationwide movement to erase racially insensitive symbols.

According to their letter, the groups “expect the NFL to engage in a robust, meaningful reconciliation process with Native American movement leaders, tribes, and organizations to repair the decades of emotional violence and other serious harms this racist team name has caused to Native Peoples.”

“It will be as if they never existed.”

It’s a shame, but you’re correct.

"More than a dozen Native American leaders and organizations"

Fake News!

These are not Native American leaders. This is a small handful of Leftist hippie agitators. They do not represent the opinions of American Indians.

American Indians have real democratically elected tribal leaders. Partisan activists have no right to claim a title of leadership.

The article state that the letter was "obtained by The Associated Press." But AP is not publishing or linking to the letter. This is weak stuff, and it deserves mockery.

I guess the PC crowd will complete the revisionist history & erase the native americans from memories going forward?

Indians, Chiefs, Braves, Redskins, Seminoles were iconic reminders of the brave people of this country, imo

bye bye

They’ve still got the military helicopters and the Tomahawk missile, unless those are going to be renamed too.

In 50 years all memories of the native American people are likely to be forgotten because of things like this. Would it be a good thing?

The “Redskin” moniker never had anything to do with the color of the actual skin. It had to do with a cultural practice amongst the tribes of certain regions using red skin paint amongst their warriors, which made their skins red. So it referred contextually specifically to their warriors, to the tribes or cultures that raised such warriors (particularly in the south-east and middle atlantic), and to the peoples as a whole as differentiated from Europeans - as when the term arose Amerinds were considered to be white.

Go back and read the old documents, treaties and such. The term is used by the various European and American entities to ‘suck up’ to the tribes. It wasn’t derogatory to anyone except for about 50-60 years at the end of the 1800s until mid 1900s.
