Russian defense industry sources have disclosed the new details of the electromagnetic pulse cannon capable of hitting targets 6 miles away.
The new super cannon will be able to shoot down aircraft and aerial drones by an electromagnetic pulse.
“The trials of EMP weapons have been under way since 2015. The latest firing of EMP cannons took place this spring. At present, the average range of EMP cannons against aerial targets is 7-8 km, with the maximum of 10 km,” one of the sources said, adding that the range of such weapons was previously estimated at 1-2 km.

Every time some bad press hits about Russia or Putin — like his getting ready to rule until 2036 — a PR release hits about some new, unstoppable weapons system!

EMP would have little effect on the F-4 because they have analog flight controls, not fly by wire.
The further the EMP weapon is from the protected asset, the more of them you need.
So, these defenses need to be at a price point to consider them effective in protecting a small number of high value assets.
Time to start building 1960’s planes again.

This seems to be not a weapon but the concept of a weapon with PR spin added by calling it a cannon. The most likely form is a flat phased microwave array such as that used in the anti-drone EM weapon that the US is begining to test in early deployment.
