“Firing” somebody for twitter comments is egregious and a denial of the 1st Amendment. However, someone who threatens to hack people with a knife for things they might say makes that person dangerous and an employer might just not want someone so unstable and perhaps dangerous as an employee or intern. It could make headlines down the road and cause lawsuits and be bad for business. Disassociating with such a one would be rational.
