The US top infectious disease expert said on Thursday he is growing increasingly concerned with the number of coronavirus infections in the United States as cases grow at an unprecedented rate even after months of lockdowns, The Hill reports.
Speaking a day after the country confirmed more than 50,000 new cases of coronavirus in a single 24-hour period, Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), said younger people are now accounting for a much greater share of the pandemic.
"I think it's pretty obvious, Howard, that we are not going in the right direction," Fauci was quoted as having said in an interview with Howard Bauchner, editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
"We need to realize that if we do not adhere to the guidelines as we're trying to open, and I don't mean officially, I mean the citizenry, the people that are out there, we're going to be in some serious difficulty," he added.
Fauci pointed to Arizona, California, Florida and Texas, four states that have accounted for about half the new cases in the country this year. Hospital systems in Arizona and Texas are beginning to report they are running out of bed space for patients, while hospitalizations are rising in other parts of the country.
Those mass outbreaks, he warned, threaten to overwhelm even areas that have the virus under control.

Well I wouldn’t say I had a slavish devotion to him, but it was the beginning of the problem and he, like others, appeared to know what he was talking about. After all, I’m not a doctor and really had no idea what to expect.
And please don’t slam me for saying ‘he appeared to know what he was talking about.’ I’d appreciate it (it would hurt my feelings; and please don’t trash me for saying that) and I bet I’m not the only one who was equally mystified as to what to expect.

Since that information isn’t provided, we’ll assume none, either because it’s too early in these new diagnoses, or because they were all more or less asymptomatic and discovered only because of testing.
How many of those tested in that 24-hour period were negative? 50,000 over a 24-hour period needs context to mean anything.

Not sure of the relevance of that is but let's go back to your 'suspend the election' scenario.
If there is no election on November 3rd then the impact doesn't kick in for just under two months. January 3, 2021 Congress convenes. Or rather what's left of Congress convenes. Nancy Pelosi is no longer Speaker of the House because there is no House; their terms ran out at noon on January 3rd. The Senate will meet, but only 65 of them since the terms of 35 senators also ran out on January 3rd. There are 30 Republican senators, but 33 Democrats and 2 independents who caucus with them so Chuck Schumer is now the Senate majority leader and he gets to appoint the new President Pro Tempore. Fast forward to January 20th. At noon the terms of the President and Vice-President end so both offices are now vacant. The Speaker of the House would then become president, but since there is no House then there is no Speaker. So the next in line is the President Pro Temp. A Democrat. Who is now president for the next four years.
Is that what you want?
If they can delay the Olympic Games for one year, to save lives, surely they can delay an election for one year to save lives.

I think what Fauci means is that the economy is starting to improve, and that is the wrong direction. He’s a Hillary Clinton fan and he knows that if the economy improves and unemployment drops back to 4 or 5 percent by election day, Biden will lose.

There was a link to a fox news story that said these hospitals were back to admitting elective surgeries which means that they are full because that is how they work.
