U.S. Marshals have been told they should gear up to defend national monuments across the country, after several of the structures were toppled or vandalized during recent protests, a report said on Wednesday.
The service has been asked to immediately prepare to provide federal law enforcement support to protect national monuments, Marshals Assistant Director Andrew C. Smith wrote in an email obtained by The Washington Post.
This is a challenging assignment due to the breadth of possible targets for criminal activity, Smith wrote.
To coordinate, the Marshals Incident Management Team will start a Joint Operations Center in Springfield, Va., and every Special Operations Group deputy will be made available to help as soon as Thursday, he wrote.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Trump administration activated the National Guard to protect monuments in Washington, D.C., as anti-racism protests continue to rage in the nations capital.

I can see a volley being fired into a mob that was rushing the White House or the Treasury Department. But what about a mob that was pulling down a statue, or breaking the windows of a police station?
I have to be realistic here. In those cases no one in authority is going to order anything more than tear gas. And as we have seen before, that doesnt do much good. The statues still come down, and windows continue to be broken.
Is this the new normal? I sure hope not.
In the good old days cops actually used their batons to stop bad behavior.
Umm...we all realize that these aren’t “antiracism” protests.
I would think that would fall to the FBI. Unfortunately, it is headed by the at best feckless Christopher Wray, who will think about a new procedure. In the meantime, he will send 15 agents to investigate a pull-down handle in a NASCAR garage, and keep an eye on any emerging white nationalist movements.
But will they once the rubber meets the road?
Guillotines!
This is a job best done by the National Guard. The U.S. Marshall Service already has a full plate with its duties to track down fugitives, serve federal warrants, transport federal prisoners, and protecting families, victims, and witnesses in federal court cases.
My ex-wife’s uncle was a U.S. Marshall, and I always enjoyed talking with him when he passed through town. Nice guy, but was without doubt a serious bad-ass when he needed to be.

Not really. Just shoot a few people attacking one monument and you won’t need to protect all of the rest of them very much, I think.
If you have people in position then you are able to monitor their comms, collect intel for use later.
It’s not always about brute force, it’s also about following the strings you pull. Arrests are being made from cell phone records as we speak.

They will stop the mob by calling in reinforcements.
