WASHINGTON (AP) Democrats controlling the House have slated a vote next week to make the District of Columbia the 51st state, an issue that they say has become far more important in the aftermath of protests for racial justice in both Washington and across the nation.
Next Fridays vote, if successful, would pass a D.C. statehood bill for the first time in the House, but the legislation faces insurmountable opposition in the GOP-controlled Senate. It comes even as the COVID-19 pandemic has forced delays in the consideration of most other legislation. More than enough lawmakers are officially backing the bill for it to pass. In 1993, the Democratic-controlled Congress defeated a D.C. statehood bill by an almost 2-1 margin.

Completely Un-Constitutional
The hell you can’t. They made a COUNTRY out of 6 city blocks.../s
There are actually legitimate legal issues with even trying to make the current district a state.
The biggest two issues. First, that Maryland and Virginia ceded territory explicitly for the use of the district, so there is question as to whether that land could be given to another state, rather than simply returned to the states that gave it up.
Second, the 23rd amendment gave the “district” 3 electors. That was considered a reasonable compromise when there were 500,000 people. But under statehood, there will still be a small “federal district”, which may have a few people at most. Those people will still get 3 electoral votes.
The congress can’t make a law to fix that, because it was an amendment, they have to fix the actual amendment, which requires 3/4ths of the states.
Please stop using facts and logic! This is all dog whistle nonsense to outrage the LIVs and have them ready to riot!
Last time they were in charge they nearly destroyed health care, to “fix it”, and they are STILL complaining about how badly it is screwed up, and promising to “fix” it again.
DOA
Well, it is easy when you have people voting by proxy, and no hearings or floor debate.
THE DEMONRATS ARE LOOKING FOR AN EXCUSE TO REDESIGN THE AMERICAN FLAG!!
If it’s really that easy can we offset it with the State of Jefferson if we take back the House?
“...Seems like the former would make the latter improbable....”
LOL..true. My wording was bad. But yeah, True IF everyone just “gives in” and falls on their knees.
How about we do this since the liberal idiots have made DC into a cesspool.
1> Give MD DC ... they can call it whatever they want. That will shut up idiots.
2> Set up a federal district in the center of the 48 states. That is the new nations capitol. We can still call it “Washington, DC”.
3> Laugh as the Dems are forced to live in “flyover country”.
4> Move monuments as the residents become more and more offended by them (unless we frigging come to our senses and face the media ... that would put an end to this ridiculous bullshit almost instantly).
5> Make a larger House of Representatives ... we need 4x the number that are in there now. Continue to GROW the House after each census as the constitution states. That will put an end to a lot of corruption.
6> Give the Senate back to the states ... let governors appoint them. If Governors are term limited, we should see much better turnover in the Senate.
And give them 2 Senators?
No!
I think that the idea is fatally flawed. The Constitution says that the seat of government shall be in a District controlled by the federal government. This is to keep the federal government from being held hostage by a hostile state government.
OK, so they’ll just shrink the District down to a few acres, say the White House, Congress, SCOTUS, and Federal buildings will still be in the District and the rest will be the new state of ‘Black Lives Matter!” (Take that, Trump!)
But then there’s the problem of the 23rd Amendment that says that District constituting the seat of government (No, it is not named) shall have three electoral votes for President.
It seems to me, being a bumpkin in fly over country, that to achieve state hood, there would have to be a Constitutional Amendment proposed by 2/3rds of each house and ratification by 3/4ths of the states. This amendment would not only have to repeal the 23rd, but also alter some changes in body of the Constitution itself.
No doubt SCOTUS could rule that when the 23rd Amendment was ratified in 1961, everyone really thought they were admitting DC as a state.
it is time to restore the original Constitution,
and give DC-UK-Vatican and the UN 30 days to leave.
See this sh*t? This is exactly what "expansion" was all about. It is absolutely contrary to our best interests to allow them to name that caldron of evil a "state."
F*** them, and the horse they rode in on.
All of this crap is the consequence of the California legislature passing a law that allows "ballot harvesting", which is just illegal fraud in my opinion.
It swung ten previously Republican districts to Democrats.
But the fact remains, these conflicts are always about representation, which translates to *POWER* in Washington DC.
They want it and will do anything to get it.
It is EASY to vote on and pass something if you know it will go no further.
(remember it wasn’t a ‘priority’ the first 2 years of WJC and certainly not of BO....ONLY time it comes up is when it can be used ‘AGAINST’ the Rs or R Administration).
I also cite the # of Rs that ran on defunding BOSCARE, knowing it would go no where as long as BO was pResident, then when they ran again and DJT had the Presidency and the Rs had the ‘rule’ in all 3 branches, it still went no where and then when PDJT tried to ‘force’ their hand the SOBs quit saying PDJT was ‘unstable and hard to work with’ when - in reality - he was just trying to have them live up to ‘what brought them there’
Then EVERYONE is ‘shocked’ when the Ds took over and Ds, along with the Rs all blamed PDJT...
November 3rd would be better.
New Wakanda
No it does not.
Yes it does. The District of Columbia is established constitutionally as the seat of the US government. The founding fathers did this so that the government specifically isn't beholding to any single state.
Don't worry though, when the dims fail at this they will try again to make Puerto Rico a state. It is all about gaining senate power.
‘Watch out if the DEMs control the House and Senate after this years elections.’
highly unlikely the dems take the senate...
