oe Laino, 71, stood near the Christopher Columbus statue in South Philadelphias Marconi Plaza on Saturday while leaning on a baseball bat.
A woman nearby held up a sign saying Stand Up, South Philly Wont Stand Down."
And another man, who declined to give his name, stood close to the statue while holding a rifle one of at least two men in the plaza carrying guns.
Thomas Easterday, 50, was among the crowd of about 100 people milling around the marble Columbus figure. He said the goal of the gathering was simple.
Protecting the statue from these rioters who want to take it down, he said.

This is what’s called “Cultural Confidence”. I’m glad to see there’s still a bit of it left in the USA.
South Philly is the Philadelphia mob stronghold.
Probably not a good idea to mess with Columbus statue there...
I used to live on 9th and Montrose. Let’s just say it was a very tight neighborhood. South Philly has changed but there are still very truly Philly neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia.
Finally some pushback against the rioting left. Maybe the spirit of Rocky is still alive in Philadelphia.
It used to be so but South Philly has been taken over by the Mexicans, the Vietnamese, Cambodians, hipsters and millenials.A good percentage of the Italian population migrated to South Jersey and Delaware. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Mayor steals the stature in the middle of the night and then condemns it the next day the way he did with the Rizzo statue.
GO GOOMBA’S!!
Yo Adrian!
Ignore rioting, assault, destruction of property and persecute law abiding citizens protecting property.
Got it.
If you live in a dem run city you should have left long ago.
Too bad the Boston Italians didnt defend the
statue up there:

A good friend of mine maintains her childhood friendships in Philadelphia. Among them is one whose family is mob connected. He confirmed that South Philadelphia streets were 'protected' during the height of the rioting with people at the ends of streets to ward off any 'visitors'. She was told that if things got too far out of hand in Philadelphia, the mayor would likely be encouraged to take care of business.
I don’t know much about Boston. Or Boston Italians :)
But not all Italians in different areas are alike.
Brooklyn/Staten Island...we’re the unrefined ones that haven’t moved to Westchester or Southern New Jersey and make believe we’re WASPs instead of WOPs :)
WASPs are great people and the backbone of this country.
But I get a kick out of Italians who move to new, perhaps more upper crust areas or get higher status careers and forget their roots.
A Columbus statue in Southern NJ wouldn’t stand a chance.
One on Staten Island...try to destroy it and there’s a good chance there would be antifa and blm bodies all around on the ground
And we don’t have one. I need to look into getting one built and placed here.
I’m assuming that’s the same for all groups though.
It depends on the area they live in and upbringing.
Anyway, i’m the only one in my family of my generation that is still on staten island.
My mother says I never made the leap to “upper class”
Im good with that
I said, why not take Camdens
Using the word surround leaves it open to interpretation.

It is purposeful and made to sound ominous.
Spoke to someone at the beginning of last week who was very upset with the rioting et al and they said, “Why listen to them or read them? They just lie to us.”
Hard-working salt of the Earth type, speaking truth.
At this point everyone recognizes the propaganda.
In the 60’s the girls from Saint Maria Goretti High School (in South Philly) were as tough and brutal as any guy in the city. Their school uniforms came with a hidden knife pocket. (OK, that’s an overstatement...but they did sew their own carry pockets!)
Here’s the live feed.Everybody knows to leave Fishtown and South Philly alone.Winding down.

“*Columbus didnt discover America he never set foot in North America!
During four separate trips that started with the one in 1492, Columbus landed on various Caribbean islands that are now the Bahamas as well as the island later called Hispaniola. He also explored the Central and South American coasts.
It’s Neumann Goretti now, and it’s still a pretty tough place. A colleague transferred there from a suburban school, and she loves it. She’s a tough city girl herself so it suits.
I'm a stone's throw from there, have been for 30 years.
Right you are, things have really changed. We were the youngest, virtually the only non-Italians on the block. Lotta young folks now, although I have to say, the neighbors who realize I'm Conservative and don't talk politics, are some really good people.
