Donald Trump has long had two cherished American institutions standing beside him as he railed against athletes taking a knee during the national anthem: NASCAR and the NFL.
This week, they both started to walk away.
Bending to the cultural moment, NASCAR and the NFL in recent days reversed course on their approach to athletes protesting racial injustice. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he had been wrong for not listening to protesting players earlier and encouraged all to speak out and peacefully protest. Meanwhile, NASCAR relaxed rules barring kneeling during the national anthem and banned Confederate flags from its events. Within days, a NASCAR driver was circling a track in a race car emblazoned with #BlackLivesMatter and a NASCAR official was taking a knee during pre-race ceremonies.
The moves came in response to the protests that have erupted across the country in response to the killing of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man who died at the hands of the Minneapolis police. And they reflected shifting cultural attitudes polls show an increasing percentage of the population view racism as a big problem in the country and the protests as a justified response.
Yet Trump stood his ground. He attacked Goodell, wondering whether the commissioner was telling players that it would now be O.K. for the players to KNEEL, or not to stand, for the national anthem, thereby disrespecting our Country & our Flag? And he separately lashed out about a blossoming discussion about renaming military bases named after Confederate leaders.
The changing tenor from the two leagues could be pivotal for Trump, though. The president has long leaned on the front offices of each organization as he has publicly attacked athletes who took a knee during the national anthem, and privately pressured some team owners to change anthem rules.

NFL was gone a long time ago. In fact The NFL started it.
********
Yeh, agree. The only way to stop their behavior is to hit them where it hurts which is their pocketbooks. We need to stop attending and/or watching their events. Stop buying products that advertise on sports shows and send letters to them pointing out the error of their ways. If their revenue stream starts to dry up even if its only say 10% or so they change their behavior. But sadly, I have zero confidence any of these actions will happen. So, guessing we are screwed .
I remember that one time freepers swore they would never watch another game, and how nice it was to spend the time with their families and use their free time more productively. That didnt last long
Big deal!
Who gives a crap about the NFL ?
Corporations just like political parties are scum.
No, he's not. This is just one more mean-spirited piece of crap written as if there's 'concern'... The NFL will never get back to it's hayday - and either will NASCAR...
Correct that to say “Trump loses to left wing organizations”. He hasn’t lost the fans on this topic.
So???
NFL is nothing but IDIOTS.....NASCAR is VERY DISAPPOINTING!! They USED to be PATRIOTIC!
PERFECT!!!
The nascar organization doesn’t vote. Who believes Trump will lose racing fans over their decision?
President Trump may have lost “. . . two cherished American institutions. . . .” when NASCAR and the NFL “started to walk away” FRom him “as he railed against athletes taking a knee during the national anthem.”
BUT, he FER SHURE! FER SHURE! did not lose any of their fans!
The fans are with him!
The fans ARE NOT WITH NASCAR AND THE NFL!
YO! NASCAR!
YO! NFL!
WHEN YOU GO BROKE, KNOW THAT IT WAS BECAUSE YOU “WOKE!”
Gonna be in the millions!
“””There is a wave of crap hitting the US and corporations are jumping on board. I cant believe it after all the president has done to improve business.”””
The Corporate Boardrooms are full on never-Trumpers who moved their factories to China for cheap labor or who have imported cheap technology people.
These Corporate Boardrooms have seen Trump as a threat who will make them actually work and be competitive.
As far what Trump has done to improve business is concerned, the Corporate Boardrooms also see that as a threat because Trump has championed the small business owner.
The sad fact is that Corporations can become as lazy as Government Bureaucrats.
I kneel for no man, government, or “progressive” movement.
Well, Im a girl, so NFL I can live without. But as a football daughter, we always had the NFL on on sundays. My father was a Marine officer, he played football at Annapolis-as captain his action photo is in the Lucky Bag. USNA yearbook. Same edition that has Jim Lovell as a senior.
I would like to think my late father would have turned off the NFL as soon as Godell announced his support of antiamerican Kaepernick instrad if using the platform to re-educate the populace on the anthem, which pledges allegiance to the flag which represents the US constitution which holds that all men (humans) are created equal by God.
I sure turned it off. Anticipating this ugly outcome as well
Why, I ask you, do not every NFL worshipping wimp of a man not have an allegiance to the flag and walk out of the stadiums and turn this shit off?
It is their fault as well. Evil thrives where good men do nothing.
FAGCAR and the Negro Felons League lost me.
I’ll never watch another FAGCAR race nor will I ever watch the kneeling negroes. I’m done for good.
the NFL is Trump’s ally?? Who wrote this trash?
Corporations are hedging their bets.
Hedging? Corporations are all in for the progressive agenda and have been so for decades.
The ironic thing is that the Left supposedly abhors corporations, but all of their movements are almost entirely corporate driven.
