I don’t think it matters much what the president wants, I think this will be a state by state thing; on the other hand, why do we care what bases are named for, and why DO we name bases after generals that fought against the united states?

Why is this still such a big deal? We keep fighting over statues of people, and now names of people. Statues of people are not “history”, they simply honor people who were part of history. Plaques are history, historical SITES are history.

These forts and bases were given their names as part of NATIONAL RECONCILIATION. Apparently you’re OK with erasing American history and traditions as long as you can simply redefine what is history.

Don’t you have anybody to beg forgiveness from, submit to, bow to and wash the feet of?

“I don’t think it matters much what the president wants, I think this will be a state by state thing . . .”

I appreciate your fidelity to the sovereignty of the states; I really do.

But these are federal military bases and only the federal government can change the sign at the front entrance.

Of course, if the California governor wants to make reference to “Fort Fabulous” in Texas I suppose he could.

Because this is base level on who controls whom.

When you allow people of an ideology antithetical to the idea of the United States control who is honored, who is not, you have surrendered to the idea they are correct and you are wrong.

Military installations are federal property; they are sovereign and do not have to cede to state authorities.

“I don’t think it matters much what the president wants, I think this will be a state by state thing;”

No, US military are federal property maintained in every way by the federal government.

“on the other hand, why do we care what bases are named for, and why DO we name bases after generals that fought against the united states?”

The naming of bases and even ships after Confederate generals was undertaken by the federal government as a symbol of reconciliation between the north and south. For that reason alone the names are worth keeping.

The men who fought that war took great pains to reconcile. There was even a 75th anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg attended by men who fought on both sides.
Do you think you know better than them?
I know I don’t.

“Why is this still such a big deal? We keep fighting over statues of people, and now names of people. Statues of people are not “history”, they simply honor people who were part of history. Plaques are history, historical SITES are history.”

All a part of the socialist plan.
To rewrite history you have to condition the population to reject any history that doesn’t fit the narrative you teach them.
Once they question actual history you then remove the focal points of actual history: statues, places named after unapproved people, plaques honoring people, etc. Once the statues, place names, plaques, etc are gone how long do you think before the books that teach the actual history will last?
We’re now at the point where unapproved movies and TV shows are vanishing. First was Song of the South. Now we’re at Gone With The Wind, Cops and Live PD.

No need to burn books anymore. Most information is digital now and the population conditioned to disregard print for digital information which is easily changed at a moments notice.

As long as the statues, place names and other things exist history can’t as easily be erased. And the left will do away with historical SITES as quickly as they will do statues.

You are aware that the church George Washington attended recently removed the plaque commemorating him aren’t you?
Do you think Barry Obama was on point when he sent back the bust of Churchill?

why DO we name bases after generals that fought against the united states?
.........................................
For the same reason that Union General Joshua Chamberlain, who was awarded the MOH for his actions at Gettysburg, and who was selected at Appomattox to receive the Confederate surrender of arms, ordered his men to salute as the Confederates passed, in respect for the valor of their defeated foe. Moreover, soldiers who fought for the Confederacy have always been considered Americans in official counts of those wounded and killed in the war, which is why the battle of Antietam is known to be, by far, the bloodiest engagement in American history.
