In a series of tweets on Wednesday afternoon, Trump called the bases named after Confederate soldiers “Hallowed Grounds” that helped train soldiers to win two world wars. He said his administration “will not even consider the renaming of these Magnificent and Fabled Military Installations.”
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany also began her briefing with the press Wednesday by reading the president's statement on the topic.
“These Monumental and very Powerful Bases have become part of a Great American Heritage, and a history of Winning, Victory, and Freedom,” Trump tweeted. “Therefore, my Administration will not even consider the renaming of these Magnificent and Fabled Military Installations. Our history as the Greatest Nation in the World will not be tampered with. Respect our Military!”
The president’s insistence that the names of the military bases remain unchanged comes just two days after U.S. Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy said he is open to the idea.
A senior Army official told Fox News on Monday that McCarthy did not plan to change the names unilaterally, but instead will seek bipartisan support to do so.

For the same reason that Union General Joshua Chamberlain, who was awarded the MOH for his actions at Gettysburg, and who was selected at Appomattox to receive the Confederate surrender of arms, ordered his men to salute as the Confederates passed, in respect for the valor of their defeated foe. Moreover, soldiers who fought for the Confederacy have always been considered Americans in official counts of those wounded and killed in the war, which is why the battle of Antietam is known to be, by far, the bloodiest engagement in American history.

There are 16 US Army Medal of Honor winners (2 in WW1, 5 in WW2, 3 in Korea, and 6 in Vietnam) from North Carolina.
Any one of these would be better than Braxton Bragg, who failed in invading Kentucky, lost Middle Tennessee and Chattanooga for the Confederacy, and was relieved of command by Jeff Davis.
He actually did win one battle (Chickamauga), but squandered the victory by not pursuing to destroy the Union Army. Why should we honor a loser like Braxton Bragg? And, shouldn’t a US Army base be named for one of the heroes who won the Medal of Honor while serving in the US Army?
The thing is, when I hear Bragg I don't think of the Civil War general, I think of the 82nd Airborne and Green Berets.
I really don't know who Benning was, but when I hear the name I think of my time in jump school and my friends who went to Ranger School.
Yeah, frankly, I didn’t know that ANY of our military bases were named for civil war generals.
I know that there are a lot of schools named after Stonewall Jackson and Robert E Lee, and I imagine most of them will change their names.
But I care about historical sites, and historical documents, more than I care about honoring the names of anybody, anywhere. If we passed a law tomorrow taking ALL personal names off of all government buildings, I’d be happy.
I find it odd that we think the name of a military base is all that keeps history history. I mean, I understand that the teaching of history can be altered, and the knowledge of history can be erased, but history is in fact history, and nothing we can do will change it.
Why does nobody really fight this battle on the level of “national reconciliation”? I mean, that is the left’s big thing right, reconciliation?
I think sometimes people forget that while the north defeated the south, we are all one america, and we needed our nation to be more than a conquering nation and a conquered adversary. But we don’t have anybody who seems to be able to make that argument anymore.

After the destruction of General Hood's Army of the Tennessee following the battles of Franklin and Nashville.
Two of the Vietnam CMOH winners from North Carolina (Eugene Ashley and Franklin Miller) were Special Forces, and one Vietnam War CMOH winner (Joel Lawrence) and one WW2 CMOH winner (Ray Eubanks) were Airborne, although I don’t think they were with the 82nd.
Wouldn’t it be great if the two bases in the US Army most associated with Airborne and Special Forces were named after CMOH winners who were actually in those units? And the fact that they are native North Carolinians would be icing on the cake! I do not believe that either Braxton Bragg or Henry Benning were jump qualified.
