Bubba Wallace wore a shirt that read "I Can't Breathe Black Lives Matter" before Sunday's NASCAR race in Atlanta, and now the circuit's only full-time black driver is pushing for change at the track.
"My next step would be to get rid of all Confederate flags," Wallace told CNN on Monday. "No one should feel uncomfortable when they come to a NASCAR race. So it starts with Confederate flags. Get them out of here. They have no place for them."
Wallace, who drives the No. 43 car for Richard Petty Motorsports, recognizes his position will not sit well with some people.
"There's going to be a lot of angry people that carry those flags proudly, but it's time for change," he said. "We have to change that, and I encourage NASCAR -- we will have those conversations to remove those flags."
Wallace, a 26-year-old native of Alabama, said he wasn't always bothered by seeing Confederate flags.
"What I'm chasing is checkered flags, and that was kind of my narrative," Wallace said, "but diving more into it and educating myself, people feel uncomfortable with that, people talk about that -- that's the first thing they bring up."
When asked whether he thought his opinion on the Confederate flag was unpopular, Wallace said he sees it as something the sport must take a strong stance on.
"We should not be able to have an argument over that," he said. "It is a thick line we cannot cross anymore."

Why didn’t he complain of this when he first became a race car driver? Why not refuse to drive a car in such a confederate loved place? Because you didn’t care...now you ...one person..wants to force your will on everyone else. That flag doesn’t hurt you. It doesn’t mean anything to most people, just a flag. I hope you never win a race, because you are deceitful and back stabbing. Choosing now to bellow about it is very low. Very very low.
Atlanta is always a difficult race on the body. This one was very tough with only five cautions. No chance to relax or hydrate.
He wasn’t the only driver treated after the race. He just happened to pass out on camera.
That said, I’m disappointed in his response as well as all the suck up other drivers.
I’m no Wallace fan but these athletes give their all during a race.
Ryan Newman, who came back after a crash at Daytona that would have killed the average person was looking extremely rough after the race.
It’s not unusual to lose ten pounds during a race.
After you’ve tried it, we can talk about stamina.

I have never cared for auto racing, which I find boring. However, I have relatives in Alabama who are huge fans. I was always under the impression that most of their fans were southerners, and probably conservative ones at that. Looks like NASCAR is following in the footsteps of the BLM League (formerly NFL).
They can shut ‘Nascar’ down permanently for all I care. It’s just one more punching bag for the ‘woke’ and now, tool for the leftist agenda to use for their own ends.
By that logic, if radical Leftists make people uncomfortable, then "Bubba Wallace" should be removed from NASCAR tracks.
The Left feels the same way about the US flag. And you probably do too.
