Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy said Thursday that New Orleans Saints' Drew Brees "can't be afraid to say that" after the quarterback's comments this week on protesting during the national anthem.
On Wednesday, Brees said that he will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America or our country, but he issued an apology Thursday morning on Instagram after he received backlash.
Dungy said on "The Pat McAfee Show" that he doesnt downgrade Drew for that because he may not totally understand.
It may have been not exactly the way he wanted to express it, but he cant be afraid to say that, and we cant be afraid to say, OK Drew, I dont agree with you, but lets talk about this, and lets sit down and talk about it, Dungy said.

I will give Coach Dungy credit for recognizing that Mr. Brees should not have bullied by other players into apologizing...
I think that Mr. Brees should have said nothing about the issue... What is the point if he was going to apologize eventually? He was too naive...I guess that he assumed that black NFL players would engage in a civil discussion with him...Wrong assumption...
Better yet, just shut up and throw the damn ball.
I will never disagree with any American standing up for his flag and country.
Whether he plays football or digs ditches.
Anybody that has a problem with that can kiss my Red, White, and Blue ass.
p.s. Coach Dungy. Thanks for blacksplaining for us simple white folks.
But he’s in an amusment industry that has no relation to resality, as he does.
If Brees were a member of FR, would you allow him to express his opinion here? Or would you intsist that he “Shut up and throw the ball”? I never expected a “freeper” would criticize patriotic speech by a celebrity. If he is to be criticized it should be for his “bowing the knee” to BLM and ANTIFA after being criticized by the left.
The core values of this great nation pivoting on the pseudo-intellectualism of the NFL...
So disrespectful to every individual, every family that strives to move forward as one American family.
Perhaps, Dungy, you may not totally understand what’s at stake.
Except I fear our liberal overlords will soon require confession and atonement for any non black who wants to work and otherwise participate in our new normal society. If we are lucky, think South African style truth and reconciliation commissions. At worst Soviet gulags for those who will not kneel.
Brees should retire. The NFL is finished. He doesnt need this garbage!
You wanna back that up coach? Pretty sure the riots are subsiding, and it aint because theres not any merchandise left.
I would say Dungy doesn't understand the concept of America and the Flag that represents its' freedom.
Dungy is just another black racist who rejects America and our Flag...and conveniently ignores the massive problems of morality & murder in the black community.
Id rather have the streets dominated by Trump than vicious Antifa and BLM thugs. Change my mind
Think he was told his post-football gig was in jeopardy.
If one doesn’t have the moral and physical courage to stand by his convictions, he should keep his damned mouth shut and keep collecting his multi-million-dollar paychecks - or retire.
I’ve heard that opinion and it makes sense, why say anything. My answer is, day one he spoke from his heart. Day two he spoke under threat.
Brees wants an announcing gig when he’s done playing, that’s what this is about.
Making money your God makes you do these kind of things.
So, why is Dungy in the hall and Tom Flores not in the hall? Just askin.
If he had said nothing, we would not be talking about how he caved. He had to know he would get serious blowback right at the time of the George Floyd riots. He is either a complete prickless coward, or not very bright. It is absolutely ridiculous to make a "patriotic speech" one day and then completely disavow it the next day. Now he has gone from standing up for the flag to joining those that want to trample on it.
Had he said nothing, more people would have thought better of him than they do now. Now blacks will see him as a rascist who needs educating, and patriotic Americans see him as a coward.
Also, if he had courage, he would not have caved. If your view is that given his ingrained cowardice, silence would have prevented it being revealed, then I concur. A lot people fail to understand that free speech is most effective when the speaker is not a squish.
I question his intelligence for making such a statement during Floydmania and for not seeming to get the fact that most of the blacks in the NFL are BLM supporters. I frankly wonder if he was drunk when he made the initial post and simply was not thinking clearly. Now he looks like one of those Chinese dissidents from the Mao years being forced to wear a dunce cap whil he shames himself in front of everybody.
None of this embarrassment would be occuring if he had not made a statement he could not stand behind.
Tucker had a NFL hall of famer on saying the same.
