In April and May of 1940, 22,000 captured Polish military, and intelligence officers were put to death, recommended by the NKVD Chief, and approved by the Politburo led by Stalin. Three years later, the Nazis stumbled over a mass grave in the Katyn Forest, and reported it. The USSR claimed it was the Nazis that had killed the men, and Russia continued to deny responsibility until 1990, when they finally admitted to the killings, and the coverup that followed. By the time it all came out, everyone involved in the murders were dead, and since the Russian government would not classify the dead as victims of the Great Purge, formal posthumous rehabilitation was deemed inapplicable. I watched a movie titled Katyn that I got from Netflix. Up until then, I'd never heard of the massacre. Both sides were capable of such an atrocity, and both sides tried to blame the other for it.
