CNN’s media pundit Brian Stelter apologized on Sunday after he was mocked for falsely claiming the historic St. John’s Church showed “no sign of smoke or fire” as it was shown ablaze live on television.
As authorities clashed with demonstrators in Washington, D.C. for the third straight night, the parish house connected to the historic St. John’s Episcopal Church across the street from the White House was set on fire late Sunday — and the chaos was aired live on Fox News.
A reporter tweeted that the landmark was on fire and CNN’s Stelter – who has become known in recent years as the media's "hall monitor" – quickly responded, “What’s your source? Live video of St. John’s does not show obvious fire.”

St. John’s means a lot to me...not only many childhood memories (saw Billy Graham and Lyndon Johnson there when I was ten or eleven). but I also went there to pray after 9/11 and I jog past it these days frequently. I was introduced to CS Lewis from their church library, too. Love that little place.

I was listening to Washington DC Fire and EMS dispatch, and the firefighters on scene were saying the same thing. I was practically screaming at my phone.
They must have had the wrong angle; thankfully they did go in and investigate.
News on this item has been confusing. Yesterday, I had read that the church itself was not on fire, but a shed connected to the property. Not seeing it myself, what am I to believe?
