Minneapolis police, protesters clash almost 24 hours after George Floyd's death in custody

Four Minneapolis police officers were fired Tuesday after the detention and death of 47-year-old George Floyd — a scene that unfolded in a Facebook video showing a white officer kneeling on Floyd’s neck as he pleaded with police, “I can’t breathe.”

Floyd died at Hennepin County Medical Center soon after the incident, which started when police detained him Monday evening on suspicion of trying to pass a fake $20 bill at a convenience store.

The FBI launched an investigation Tuesday, as the Minneapolis Police Department fired the officer as well as three others who were at the scene.

Anger over the death became more visible Tuesday night as protesters marched from where police held the man down at 38th Street and S. Chicago Avenue, heading to the department's 3rd Precinct headquarters. Later, police in riot gear and protesters clashed.

“Being black in America should not be a death sentence,” a visibly shaken Mayor Jacob Frey said. “For five minutes, we watched a white officer press his knee into a black man’s neck. Five minutes. When you hear someone calling for help, you’re supposed to help. This officer failed in the most basic, human sense.”

Maybe if these thugs hadn’t enforced lockdowns or shot Aussie women who needed their help, they would have more goodwill among the people.

I’m trying to remember, did white people riot and loot when that white Aussie woman was shot and killed by the black muslim cop?

No, they did not, as wrong as that killing was.

But what has that to do with this? "What-about-isms" are pathetic, immature responses to obvious wrong doings.

This man was detained and surrounded. Yet the officer had a knee on this man's neck until he suffocated. Are you kidding me?

Worth repeating. Especially in light of the total jerks cracking jokes on this thread about looting workboots and TV sets. Some days Free Republic is the rotten cesspool its detractors say it is.

That's exactly right!

Might want to look at the video again. The cop was asking him if he’d stop fighting them and get in the car if they let him up.

You're so full of sh*t it staggers the human mind.

An unarmed man, already cuffed and lying down in the road, died after a 220-lb or so (now ex-) policeman kneeled with his knee on the guy's neck for 7-9 minutes, even as passerby are filming and some are saying, "stop, you're killing him".

Other policemen -- now known to have earlier used excessive force (knocking a teenager's teeth out) -- stop passers-by from helping the guy on the ground, and appears to be maneuvering to keep the incident from being filmed.

The guy doing the kneeling stayed kneeling on the dead guy's neck for about 2 1/2 minutes AFTER the guys' bowels evacuated...presumably the time of his death.

The paramedics found no pulse when they showed up.

And the guy doing the knee on the neck? Put his hands in his pockets while it was going on. Not exactly a subliminal sign of fear for one's life or safety.

Did you even bother to watch the full video?

Yes, I watched the video. My take away was the same as yours. What’s the rant about?

Your remarks but there is no evidence in this case that the death rises to a federal matter or even to a level needing the state police. if it does then all deaths do.

Sounded like defending the police, in the following respect:

Ever hear of "deprivation of rights under colour of law?"

It's how they took down the Klan back in the day, when white officials would either turn a blind eye or participate in beating / killing black people.

Seems literally tailor-made for this case.

Minneapolis is a stronghold for the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL), an affiliate of the Democratic Party.

"DFL" ... you spelled "Dumb Fricking Liberal" wrong, didn't you?

I was not defending the police. The video, at least to me, is so obviously damning that the resolution is self-evident...prosecute the cops. If Minnie needs the FBI, or the FBI feels compelled, to get involved in a case this obvious then every murder requires the FBI. The FBI needs to stick to things that are at the federal level rather than local and state law enforcement.

Deprivation of civil rights under colour of law *IS* a Federal Matter.

Since the murder happened under the supposedly imprimatur of the Minneapolis Police Dept,, AND since they were fired, I suspect that is enough to pierce qualified immunity and open them up to the Deprivation of Rights charges from the Feds.

Over and out, no further flames intended.

Ahhh, so you don’t think Minnesota has a dozen laws on the books to deal with this. Got it. Different issue but I got it.

They used these laws on the Klan at the Federal Level when the Southern (Democrat, back then) states used creative incompetence to avoid prosecutions.
