Memorial Day Weekend Corona Virus Thread
Thread is dead due to flubros. People get tired of being called names and put down not only by leftist but more importantly fellow FR. I stopped going to the rest of the forum for quite a while. Too heck with the nasty ugly comments outside this thread. Especially the nasty ugly from those who used to be friendlies here.
In Central TX, the charts are now including “probable” cases separate from the tested positive “active cases.” Don’t know if we’re short of test kits again or someone in the family tested positive and calling other family members sick if they’re showing symptoms instead of testing or what. Either way, the numbers for both are running neck and neck so I’m personally counting them both as having something I don’t want to catch. And in 3, 2, 1 before the nasty ugly flu bro comments that I’m the most stupid ignorant slime trail of a slug for such beliefs.
Some of the incredibly stupid mistakes by the CDC finally get reported...
Thanks for the link.
It is nice to see someone posting on the non-flubros thread.
This is a COVID-19 video worth watching on how anticoagulants keep people from dying from COVID-19

Non-ICU COVID-19 patients given anticoagulants strongly tend to stay out of the ICU.
High dose anticoagulants don’t help and might hurt ICU COVID-19 patients.

“Aplidin, also known as Plitidepsin, has gone through a Phase II clinical trial against COVID-19 and is now awaiting the start of Phase III testing. “
27 times more potent than Remdesivir!
Not a new drug, has been used for multiple myeloma.
Great news. (And “about time!”)
About time.
Wonders of wonders. Color me shocked. The cases have leveled off here now that it is no longer tourist season. But this lull won’t last long as tourist season will pick up in two months and our local officials will again be sending out their idiotic advertisements to them.
No update on our neighbor’s grandkids’ conditions.

Heart Damage Found in More Than Half of COVID-19 Patients Discharged From Hospital

This fellow has been the best modeller of the progress of the disease. Widely praised by all.
His model calls for the end of restrictions by Summer at the latest.
Very well reasoned.
Milestone: US deaths fall below “expected deaths” for first time since end of last March.
https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/excess_deaths.htm
Was looking for the effect of acidity on killing the virus since there were early indication it did (was wondering- don’t laugh!- if simply huffing vinegar fumes was a reasonable prophylactic) and ran across this:
” [The virus’s] Spike has three identical copies of the domain. At the neutral pH level found in the human bloodstream, one of them is in the open or ‘up’ position, says study co-lead author Yaroslav Tsybovsky, Ph.D., a microscopist in the Electron Microscopy Laboratory at Frederick National Laboratory. Certain antibodies recognize and attach to the open, exposed domain, lowering the coronavirus’ chances of docking with and entering a cell.
But the study results indicate that the effect doesn’t always last. If the virus succeeds in entering a cell via a mechanism called the “endosomal pathway”—where the pH is much more acidic than in the bloodstream—the receptor-binding domain on spike closes itself off, shaking off the antibodies that attached to it. Freed, the virus can take over the cell and spread the infection...”
Over my head. But amazing what they can see with those electron mictoscopes!
The toll so far:

Interesting point to me: if you’re under 30 you were more likely to die of pneumonia than covid.
Vice versa for those much older but not greatly so.
https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2778361
“A study analyzing US mortality in March-July 2020 reported a 20% increase in excess deaths, only partly explained by COVID-19. Surges in excess deaths varied in timing and duration across states and were accompanied by increased mortality from non–COVID-19 causes.1 This study updates the analysis for the remainder of 2020.”
Another new TREATMENT added to the covid-fighting armory:

“these investigators searched through 3000 approved drugs that block that and found one—niclosamide—that that works against tapeworm with much promise vs #SARSCoV2”
Intriguing that many anti-parasite drugs work against covid.
Development of “pancoronavirus” vaccines. Early days but promising.
variant p.1 and “wild” immunity
https://science.sciencemag.org/content/early/2021/04/13/science.abh2644
“we estimate that P.1 may be 1.7–2.4-fold more transmissible, and that previous (non-P.1) infection provides 54–79% of the protection against infection with P.1 that it provides against non-P.1 lineages.”
