U.S. agrees to pay Sanofi and GSK $2.1 billion for 100 million doses of coronavirus vaccine
The U.S. government will pay drugmaker Sanofi and GlaxoSmithKline up to $2.1 billion to develop and deliver 100 million doses of their potential coronavirus vaccine, the companies announced Friday. More than half of the $1.5 billion will be used to support further development of the vaccine, including clinical trials.
The rest will be for manufacturing and delivery of the 100 million doses,
the companies said. The U.S. will have the option to order an additional 500 million doses, they said.
Public health officials say there is no returning to normal
until there is a vaccine against the coronavirus, which has infected
more than 17 million people worldwide and killed at least 667,808, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
More than 150 vaccines are under development, according to the World Health Organization, with 25 already in clinical trials.
Comment: I do not think a vaccine will work, and our money is better spent on treatment avenues.
Hundreds of Georgia campers infected with coronavirus at YMCA camp in just days, CDC report finds
According to the report, of the 597 residents who attended the camp, 344 were tested and 260 tested positive for the virus. The camp was only open for four days before being shut down because of the virus, and officials followed all recommended safety protocols.
..The CDC said that what happened at High Harbor shows that earlier thinking that children might not be as susceptible to COVID-19 is wrong.
..
These findings demonstrate that SARS-CoV-2 spread efficiently in a youth-centric overnight setting, resulting in high attack rates among persons in all age groups, despite efforts by camp officials to implement most recommended strategies to prevent transmission,” the report said.
..
It also showed that about 75%, or 3 quarters of the young persons who got it developed symptoms,
Texas: +8,839 cases. The seven day case average is up. Positivity rate increased slightly. Hospitalizations also up slightly.

Agreed. I hate to see all the money and focus on vaccine which are not promising, rather than testing and treatment. I just read an article about test shortages. This needs to be our focus.
” testing and treatment “
Should be the focus reportage now. But...
Our media!
After shouting about rising cases, they’ve turned to rising deaths and as the deaths go down they’ll turn to reporting on risks to children and after effects.
I’m curious about the after-effects but, anyway, there’ll be less of them with earlier discovery and better treatments.
” 344 were tested and 260 tested positive for the virus. “
A HUGE positivity rate!
This is why I wonder about contact tracing (what happened here) distorting our understanding of the positivity rates reported.
Depends on if contact tracing testing is a large share of the testing though. And, of course, we’re not told that.
Re: 3078 - My stepdaughter is throwing in the towel on living in Chiba (specifically Ichikawa) and is moving back with some relatives in Fujinomiya. She’ll be moving in mid-August. Once things calm down will re-assess - I advised her to do that re-assessment in February / March. She wants to come back to the US but I said for now it’s best to steer clear.
