President Trump continues pummeling Jeff Sessions, but this time he punches back

Former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired back at President Donald Trump over the latest personal insult aimed at supporting his competitor in the Republican primary for a U.S. Senate seat.

The president endorsed former college football coach Tommy Tuberville over his old attorney general and has openly berated Sessions for recusing him in the Department of Justice investigation into Russian election interference.

"3 years ago, after Jeff Sessions recused himself, the Fraudulent Mueller Scam began. Alabama, do not trust Jeff Sessions. He let our Country down. That's why I endorsed Coach Tommy Tuberville (@TTuberville), the true supporter of our #MAGA agenda!" the president tweeted on Friday.

While Sessions has faced the slings and arrows of public insults from the president in the past with nary a word of protest, he finally issued a response in his defense.

"Look, I know your anger, but recusal was required by law. I did my duty & you're damn fortunate I did. It protected the rule of law & resulted in your exoneration. Your personal feelings don't dictate who Alabama picks as their senator, the people of Alabama do," said Sessions in his own tweet.

Look, I know your anger, but recusal was required by law.

Bullshit Jeff...

That’s a very creative and cowardly look at the law.

That statement alone shows what a disaster he was as Attorney General...

If the law demanded your recusal, then you should have never accepted the position in the first place.

Recusing himself wasn’t the problem. Even if he wasn’t legally obligated to do so, the political optics of him staying in that role would have been terrible — especially since it is now obvious that he was probably under illegal surveillance for the entire duration of the campaign.

The real problem with Sessions was that he didn’t resign the AG post completely. In fact, the only thing worse than that is that Trump ever hired him in the first place ... though it must be pointed out that there wasn’t exactly an all-star cast of candidates for the AG post at the time.

All this misery Trump has endured has been caused by Sessions. He should have retired.

I had to giggle visualizing Sessions “punching” Trump.

Right. Trump got three years of hellish lies that the majority of American fools believed thanks to Sessions’ cowardice.

Sessions kept his mouth shut and did nothing to reign in his out of control employees. By his refusal to even make one peep about what was going on he actively aided and abetted the attempted coup.

His recusal was not required by law. He claims that he could have been a witness, so he had to recuse, but he was not a witness. It was just the Democrats throwing that out there to rattle him in order to see if they could get Rosenstein in charge. Sessions could have told the Democrats to pound sand and there was nothing they could do. He chose to believe his Senate buddies rather than the President.

Sessions was a part of trumps problem. There are many still close to him that are.

Recusing himself wasn’t the problem.

I believe you will find that is a minority view here. It meant it was free-play kindergarten at DOJ and the FBI for the in the bag for Obama / Hillary deep state.

Just insisting on a competent special prosecutor and a balanced investigative / prosecutorial staff would have taken the country in an entirely different direction

Tuberville is a slimy liar who is in league with open borders traitors and has bashed Trump nastily in the past. Also he seems REALLY dumb, and likely to follow deep state matters like a puppy.

This is a perfect example.

Sessions is 73 years old. He was in the Senate for 20 years. He was U.S.
Attorney for 12 years and Alabama A.G. for 2 years. He was a disaster of U.S. A.G. for 2 years.

Why does a 73 year old man want back into politics, especially after what Trump and THE WHOLE COUNTRY has been through because of him? This guy has no dignity, no shame and is thirsty for power.

Go home take a nap and enjoy your retirement, you’ve done enough.

One of my favorite films is Breaker Morant...

A great film indeed. Watched it last night. Talk about a stacked deck trial. The scene where the Chief of Staff of the highest-ranking British officer in South Africa at the time (1901) blatantly lies under oath is a terrific portrayal of how far the "Deep State" is prepared to go to protect its power base.

For us Americans, the next six months will likely see a lot of perjury.

Sessions had to defend himself, but recusal was NOT required by law. Sessions thought he was being noble.

I rather agree with you. “Been on the job too long...”

Trump needed an energetic AG. Instead he got a semi-retired gentleman who ran away from the key issue in front of him to avoid any questions about his reputation, and then produced initiatives on pot and re-invigoration of the asset forfeiture program. Not the man for the job, or at least, no longer the man for the job.

But think carefully...it was obvious that Colonel Hamilton was *very* uncomfortable hearing Lord Kitchner suggest that he lie ("what do I say?") and was every bit as uncomfortable while he was lying under oath. And think back to Lord Kitchner's reason for sacrificing the three Aussies ("I'm trying to put an end to this damn stupid war").

As questionable as what happened to Morant and Handcock was the motivation just might have been morally defensible when looking at the "big picture".

OTOH,the Rats of today aren't trying to put an end to any damn stupid war. They're trying to put an end to this damn stupid country and society (their thoughts, not mine).

History will not be kind to Jeff Sessions. He carried water for the deep state just days into his tenure.

IMHO...Sessions was sent in BY the never-Trumper DC Uni-Party to attempt to control the new “rogue” White House.

the Trump crowd figgered it out as soon as Sessions “recused” allowing the Uni-Party free reign the next 2 years.

The DC Uni-Party knew Trump was sent to dismantle DC as we all know it and their “job” has been to impeded that process as much as possible. It is still on-going-and our PDJT needs massive numbers in the House and Senate to overcome and prevail after November. Sessions, if elected , will “recuse” from the process of dismantling DC-while the remaining DC Uni-Party members will continue to obstruct Trump’s electoral mandate. Sessions truly believes standing against Trump is the “patriotic” thing to do-basically the defense of DC status quo Uni-Party rule.

The President obviously sees Tuberville as a preferential ally in that process in his next administration.

Thats good enough for me.

It might be a minority view here, but I've found that the "majority" view overlooks a lot of facts. Just a few worth noting (starting with one point you made):

1. "It meant it was free-play kindergarten at DOJ and the FBI for the in the bag for Obama / Hillary deep state." -- Maybe this was true, but if the DOJ/FBI was filled with that many Democratic political operatives then what difference did it make whether or not Sessions stayed involved? You're actually making Sessions' point. If he hadn't recused himself, his DOJ would have been working with their media partners to undermine him every step of the way.

2. A lot of folks here have either forgotten the timeline of events in the spring of 2017, or they deliberately overlook them. The special counsel wasn't appointed when Sessions recused himself. When Sessions recused himself in early March 2017, the Deputy AG (Rosenstein) basically took on the role of the AG in any matters related to the recusal. Mueller wasn't appointed by Mueller until more than two months later -- on May 17th. What happened in the meantime? Here's what happened: Rosenstein and Sessions provided the formal recommendations to fire FBI director James Comey in early May of that year, on the grounds of Comey's incompetence/malfeasance in the Clinton investigation in 2016. And then President Trump did an interview with Lester Holt of NBC that aired two days after Comey was fired, in which he said he got rid of Comey over the Russia investigation.

That last point is critical, and nobody here seems to have any interest in discussing it. Unless there was an angle to this that I'm not seeing, that seems to be a colossal big-mouth blunder on Trump's part. Forget about just saying that in public. Why the hell would he even do a TV interview in the first place with a media outlet that he has rightly derided as "fake news" and "NBC/Con-cast" for years?
