All McMichael had to do was get in his truck and call 911 and tell them he was following the guy they believed to be the same man who was trespassing a few day back. Follow at a safe distance and relay position to police until they can stop and question him.

you and bryan may not like citizen’s arrest laws- but they are perfectly legal- so no- Bryan wasn’t making ‘far too much sense’- Was calling the police an option? Sure- (They did infact call police) Was going after the dude to question him an option? Yes- a legal option- Was detaining him via a citizen’s arrest a legal option? Yes-
