The state’s embattled unemployment department will hire 1,800 people — including 600 phone agents — over the next two weeks as the state frantically scrambles to help respond to frustrated out-of-work California residents who continue to get jammed phone lines and lengthy waits for answers.

Sharon Hilliard, director of the Employment Development Department, heard a barrage of complaints from California Assembly and Senate members Thursday at budget hearings.

One by one, Assembly members described constituents’ frustration getting through to the agency, which manages the state’s unemployment insurance program.

Is this because they couldn’t bear to have people receive checks bearing Trump’s signature?

They can cry all the way to the bank because once they're hired they'll have a job with all the benefits, for life.

In Florida the 3rd largest state by the way got around this problem by moving something like 2,000 state employees whose regular job (like being a park ranger at a closed state park) was not needed to answer the phone and input data for unemployment benefits. And BTW Gov DeSantis in Florida did this about 4 weeks ago.

This is a classic example of why Democrats should not be allowed to manage any government entity whatsoever. Democrats simply do not possess the skill set needed to handle unexpected situations.

Yeah, but they're real good at sponging off of and prancing around on and taking credit for things that their betters made for them.

They can hear the desperation.

If it doesn’t get solved soon they will hear a lot of gun loading and cocking sounds.

Paying increasing taxes for others to be freeloaders for years and then through no fault of their own now having the same monthly income as the derelicts sleeping on the sidewalk is not a happy situation.

Such a shame what has happened to this state. CA was a leader in almost everything in the 50s and 60s.

Ohio has an R governor. They can’t get their unemployment call center working right. They could have taken state workers away from “non-essential jobs” and moved them there, but they didn’t.

California anticipated annual budget was $150 Billion. Now they project a $50 Billion shortfall in tax receipts. Will they sell junk bonds? Or write bad checks. Going to be an interesting year!

You can bet those non-essential state workers are getting a paycheck while sitting at home doing nothing, because Covid...

we had a long line of Republican governors. All of Orange County used to be solid Republican. Now its Deep Blue.

We’re unlikely to see another Republican in Sacramento. When they get there....thet are just spinning their wheels!
