Nineteen years ago, a small group of Canadian FReepers set out on a journey to provide Canada with the same sort of political outlet that our American friends have with Free Republic.
We started a Canada Chapter on this site, which we quickly outgrew. Then, we moved to our own site, and called it Free Dominion.
Out of gratitude to Jim Robinson, and our friends on FR, we provided a backup forum for FReepers for when FR experienced technical problems. And, many Free Republic members registered, and regularly logged in to say hi! Several FR stalwarts, like coteblanche, backhoe and B4Ranch, spent hours on Free Dominion, helping us keep our content fresh until we were on our feet. Backhoe was a regular on Free Dominion until he passed away.
We eventually had over 10,000 members, which is very significant in a small market like Canada!
Unfortunately, Free Dominion ran into some difficulties that I can't really talk about without putting myself at risk (you can find other threads here that detail our adventures, though). Ultimately, with great sadness, we had to close our doors in 2016.
Now, however, Canada is in a dangerous place. We are in a lockdown that our Prime Minister is promising will last until there is a vaccine, and he has already taken the opportunity to use his emergency powers to ban some 1,500 weapons! Some of us believe he is moving toward a universal basic income, and that he might attempt to win a majority this Fall.
Canadian conservatives cannot depend on Twitter and Facebook for our communications, so we have relaunched Free Dominion.
I asked Jim Robinson if it was okay to let you all know we are open again, and he was gracious enough to say yes. So, here is our link: https://freedominion.ca.
Although we have lost some of our faithful FReeper friends over the past few years, I hope some of you will drop by and register, maybe have some good conversations as we try to get the ball rolling again, from scratch!
And, as before, if you ever have a need for a place to hang out if FR is down, you will be welcomed with open arms at your sister site in Canada!
As an Alaskan, next door neighbors to our friends in the Yukon who are mostly liberty lovers like most of us in Alaska, this is really great news. Don’t want to leave out Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba (not so much BC).
As I remember, you (Connie) are from Alberta, right?
I’ll be dropping by to register. God bless.
I am from Ontario, but I have family in Alberta. :-)
God Bless you Connie. I well remember the reasons why you had to stop Free Dominion. But if you don't care to bring up the past, then I won't either.
I'll just hope that basic freedoms return to Canada some day. As well as here in the US.
I don’t mind if you bring it up. I just can’t because the Court said I can’t. :-)
Great to see you again!
My bad to have left out Ontario. Having traveled through the western provinces I mentioned so many times, from top to bottom, I naturally can’t comment on anything east of Manitoba.
I’m sure there are many such as yourself in those provinces.

As always, best wishes to our Canadian cousins.
Hi Connie, I hope all is good with you. I know we all lost touch with the great difficulties we all faced. And I have been banned by my wife from ever going to facebook. Her concerns were our family, her job, my job.
We both know the left likes to stalk us to punish us for free speech.
So I hope FD becomes a safe place to exchange ideas.

I’m wondering if you should have your sites physically based outside Canada, and administered by a non-Canadian who the Canadian government cannot touch?
I loved your site as a backup to Free Republic.
I’ve never been a big fan of Facebook.
As I person in business for myself, I don’t do politics on Facebook. I just don’t.
So in this case, I don’t want to post anything on the Facebook Free Republic group, at least with my real name. Hell, I’m happy to take a liberal’s or leftist’s money as much as the next guy! I’d hate to lose a client over politics.
I did think it was funny! Was just joking that we don’t have a guy that does that yet. If you want to be him, the position is open! LOL!
The server is outside of Canada. We looked into having a non-Canadian run it, but nobody we talked to wanted to take the risk. It is totally understandable because it is a lot to risk to take on for someone else’s country.
So, I guess we stand up again and see how long it is before they shoot us down.
It is so great to see you!!
We are going to do our best to make FD as safe as possible. We will keep as little information as possible, and would encourage people to sign up using disposable email addresses if they want to do that.
We have also told former members not to feel like they have to use their old usernames if they don’t want to.
Facebook is a terrible place to discuss politics. People post their lame memes, and if you so much as question them, they act like you just insulted their mother. I hate it.
Signed up. God speed.
Great idea. Thanks Connie.
