Flattening the curve is a new term for most of us not steeped in the world of public health or epidemiology. Prior to the Chinese Coronavirus making a mess of lives and economies, this term might have featured in a Saturday morning infomercial on the latest weight loss fad. Now it has become the holy grail of fighting this viral pandemic.
The New York Times, in a rare moment not bashing President Trump, explains flattening the curve. There are two curves, a steep one and a flat one, as we have seen endlessly on the news.
One had a steep peak indicating a surge of coronavirus outbreak in the near term; the other had a flatter slope, indicating a more gradual rate of infection over a longer period of time.
The gentler curve results in fewer people infected at this critical moment in time preventing a surge that would inundate the healthcare system and ultimately, one hopes, resulting in fewer deaths.
The basketball player wholeheartedly agrees. What we need to do is flatten that down, said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
But the area under the curve, the number of cases, and potentially deaths, is about the same. It is like ripping off a bandage quickly, which may hurt at the moment, versus peeling it off slowly and painlessly but taking longer to accomplish. As the NY Times notes, fewer deaths is what one hopes for but not necessarily what one expects.
If the medical system is overwhelmed, there may not be enough ventilators or ICU beds to meet demand. Fortunately, this never occurred, even in the epicenter of New York City.

It’s far more than either of those at this point.
This is full on totalitarianism.
Flattening the Curve still means practically everyone should get the virus, but do so over time in a way that allows everyone to have hospital access, if they need it.
Fearpers want Eliminate the Curve, which cant happen if anyone is ever allowed out of their homes. Wed need to shut down government and hospitals and not allow anyone to get or be given food they didnt already have in their homes. No one could walk outside.
That cant be done.
Mission Success Trump flatten the curve on 86942 lives lost compare to over 2 Million predicted if the USA did not flatten the curve.
How about flattening the economy, flattening education etc.?
It will spread like the flu...open up with no restrictions...
Lockdowns will never end with fifty dictatorships....
That would be by far the best thing to do—with special resources offered for the vulnerable as needed.
But it is clear now that this was never really about the disease. And it is not nearly only about Trump—who is going along with all the essential elements anyway.
More like carpet-bomb the economy, planned years ago by air Marshalls Cloward and Piven.
Its Flattening Deplorables.
Flattening the curve is a euphemism glomed on by presstitutes and people who can’t comprehend what a curve actually is.
Hey mathematicians, help me here! It looks like the areas of both curves are the SAME! Am I right? Same number of deaths, but over a longer period of time. This is very important! It looks like they didn’t care about reducing the deaths, but only about not overwhelming hospitals. What do you think?
That’s been the whole point all along. You’ll have the deaths - but the idea is not to overwhelm the hospitals or you would have had even more deaths.
Of course now the “flatten the curve” has become “we’ll open up when the ‘data’ says nobody else will ever get sick”.
“Oh - and if you don’t agree with that - you just don’t care about people and want them to DIE!!!”
By the way - many would classify me as a ‘Fearper’ based on my own personal precautions that I take.
You wasting your time trying to reason here. I hear you, it was about not overwhelming hospitals buying a little time to develop treatments and the long shot vaccine for this fall.
And the Constitution-turning states into totalitarian dictatorships.
Thats been the whole point all along. Youll have the deaths - but the idea is not to overwhelm the hospitals or you would have had even more deaths.
*********
The hospitals did not get overwhelmed because this disease does not require hospitalization for most victims, not because of the masks and social distancing. This is clear because nursing homes account for a large percentage of the deaths and many positive testers had light or no symptoms. To be fair to the “Fearpers,” the data bearing on lethality was hidden by the media.
That “Amazing economy” pic sure looks some Russian cities I’ve been too.
I just wish we could make citizens arrests on Democrat Governors.
