Funny you should mention the foil thing...

Last night we were on-line looking for something to stick our phones in while out and about. Found some well-reviewed items, but the best reviewed were very pricey. So we started experimenting at home to see what we were dealing with.

Signal got through a metal lunchbox and a cast iron dutch oven. Couldn’t make calls, but texts still got through. Then hubby got out the tin foil. A few wraps of that and we were good to go. No call reception and no texts could get through good ol’ Reynolds Wrap Heavy Duty.

But I don’t think we’ll be seeing that used in a commercial any time soon...

About the metal lunchbox. It is possible the text messages didn’t actually arrive on the phone while the phone is in the metal box. Sent messages will show as “delivered”, but it really means delivered to the phone carrier. Messages will be saved on the carrier’s servers until the phone is actually reachable. The phone could be turned off, out of cell range, or in a lunchbox.

It becomes a bit of a “Schrödinger’s Cat” (Schrödinger’s cellphone?”) problem to determine if the messages got thru to the phone in the lunchbox. Without opening the lunchbox you can’t tell if the messages arrived or didn’t arrive on the phone.

If you could fit the cell phone *and* your husband into the lunchbox, you could then try the experiment again, but I don’t recommend this, even in the name of science. ;-)
