New York Times: Anxious About the Virus, Older Voters Grow More Wary of Trump

WASHINGTON - The coronavirus crisis and the administration’s halting response to it have cost President Donald Trump support from one of his most crucial constituencies: America’s seniors.

For years, Republicans and Trump have relied on older Americans, the country’s largest voting bloc, to offset a huge advantage Democrats enjoy with younger voters. In critical states like Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Florida, all of which have large older populations, Trump’s advantage with older voters has been essential to his political success; in 2016, he won voters over the age of 65 by seven percentage points.

But seniors are also the most vulnerable to the global pandemic, and the campaign’s internal polls, people familiar with the numbers said, show Trump’s support among voters over the age of 65 softening to a concerning degree, as he pushes to reopen the country’s economy at the expense of stopping a virus that puts them at the greatest risk.

A recent Morning Consult poll found that Trump’s approval rating on the handling of the coronavirus was lower with seniors than with any other group other than young voters. And former Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, in recent polls held a 10-point advantage over Trump among voters who are 65 and older. A poll commissioned by the campaign showed a similar double-digit gap.

The falloff in support comes as Trump has grown increasingly anxious about his reelection prospects, with a series of national surveys, as well as internal polling, showing him trailing in key states.

“Trump has suffered a double whammy with seniors from the coronavirus crisis, both in terms of a dislike for his personal demeanor and disapproval of his policy priorities,” said Geoff Garin, a Democratic strategist. “If there’s a durable change with older voters, it could well cost Trump the election.”

What would the Democrats have done better? They wanted the borders to remain open, which would have been worse. They want the economy to stay shut down even though it is clear that the primary victims are the elderly in nursing homes and the best policy is to quarantine them. ICUs are nowhere close to being full so the aim of "flattening" the curve may have worked too well.

The one real test of the Democrats has been Governor Corleone Cuomo and his policy of sending the infected back to nursing homes. I guess he could have killed more old people by shipping in canisters of Zyklon B instead of patients infected with the Kung Flu, but it would have been close.

About the only really big mistake by the Trump administration is letting the Chinese Disease Collaborators in Atlanta take over testing and f#=$ it up instead of pushing it to industry right away, but the statists in the Democratic Party would have stuck with the CDC longer.

It's called the "bandwagon effect" -- where you show a group of people with a particular opinion, with the hope that people not on the bandwagon yet will elect to climb up and be counted. One of the old ways politician have used for centuries.

If schools still taught civics, the students would know.

The New York Times lies.

Or they're so stupid they don't remember how many times they've told us 'THIS IS IT - TRUMP'S FINISHED'

How many stories have started with that premise since the day Trump rode down the escalator? A few hundred? More like a few thousand... The New York Time and their sycophants don't tire of being wrong or looking like fools...

Great points.

Look, I can buy the argument that this crisis has created headwinds for Trump’s reelection. Things were going pretty great for this country across the board a few months ago, and then —bam— lockdowns, massive unemployment, mask-wearing, etc. There’s going to be a lot of discontent, and some not-so-bright folks will reflexively and irrationally blame the guy in charge (Trump). What I *can’t buy* is that many folks who voted for Trump over Hillary Clinton last time are going to look at Joe Biden, a feeble, pathetic excuse for a candidate, a veritable advanced-stage dementia patient, and see someone who they think is likely to do a better job.

Covidictator Cuomo telling us that most of NYC's Covid-19 came from their homes.

“If you notice, 18% of the people came from nursing homes, less than 1% came from jail or prison, 2% came from the homeless population, 2% from other congregate facilities, but 66% of the people were at home, which is shocking to us,” Cuomo said.

“This is a surprise: Overwhelmingly, the people were at home,” he added. “We thought maybe they were taking public transportation, and we’ve taken special precautions on public transportation, but actually no, because these people were literally at home.”

Cuomo said nearly 84% of the hospitalized cases were people who were not commuting to work through car services, personal cars, public transit or walking. He said a majority of those people were either retired or unemployed. Overall, some 73% of the admissions were people over age 51.

He said the information shows that those who are hospitalized are predominantly from the downstate area in or around New York City, are not working or traveling and are not essential employees. He also said, a majority of the cases in New York City are minorities, with nearly half being African American or Hispanic.

Majority of N.Y. hospitalized coronavirus patients had self-isolated

Not “every dang nation”. Perhaps you forgot that Sweden didn’t lock down. Also, there were various degrees of “lockdown”, some more austere than others. A look at comparative statistics tells a story also.

This article perfectly explains why left was so eager to ban HCQ treatment and restrict supply as well as force return of CV19 patients to retirement communities

Don’t believe the horse crap coming from the fake news Times. The fake news will be hitting us with this crap until Nov. 3, in order to deflate the Trump base.
