A Chinese military strategist has warned that the coronavirus pandemic should not be seen as a chance for Beijing to take back Taiwan by force, saying that was not the top priority and the focus should be on the “national rejuvenation” dream. Qiao Liang, a retired air force major general who is seen as a hawkish voice in China, made the remarks as nationalistic sentiment is rising in the mainland, with calls for Beijing to take action on issues like pro-independence forces in Taiwan and Washington’s criticism over the pandemic.
“China’s ultimate goal is not the reunification of Taiwan, but to achieve the dream of national rejuvenation – so that all 1.4 billion Chinese can have a good life,” Qiao, a professor at the PLA National Defence University in Beijing, said in an interview on Monday.
“Could it be achieved by taking Taiwan back? Of course not. So we shouldn’t make this the top priority. If Beijing wants to take Taiwan back by force, it will need to mobilise all its resources and power to do this,” he said. “You shouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket, it’s too costly.”

I always figured China would just buy out Taiwan.
Wow.. look out Taiwan- China is about to take you over by force.
“Too costly” meaning while Trump is President.
Because now most of the world is up in arms against them and are ready to fight them.
Makes sense to me, but probably a Head Fake, so The West will look elsewhere for trouble.

The government in Taiwan might reasonably talk about "taking back" the mainland -- though the current balance of forces makes such an attempt inadvisable -- but the phrase does not work the other way around.
What China doesn't want is for Taiwan to proclaim independence.

Taiwan is just the most obvious target for the Chi-coms, now that they have Hong Kong and Macau secured. But it’s naive to think that it’s the last of their potential conquests. There are millions of ethnic Chinese in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Myanamar, Philippines, South Korea, Vietnam. China views some of these countries as mere “provinces of their regime”, which to them justifies the Ukraine-style incursions perpetrated by Putin. They will justify their actions by the need to “protect” the ethnic Chinese people in these countries. We have already seen their disputes in the South China Sea with Vietnam, Philippines, Brunei and Malaysia, and their proxy in North Korea continues to threaten South Korea and Japan.
