In most countries in Europe and North America, governments have imposed lockdowns of their populations and economies. At first glance, this strategy would seem to strike a reasonable, if painful, bargain: pay the price of (hopefully temporary) limits on civil liberties and economic recession (if not depression) to slow virus spread. The price has been very high. In the U.S. alone, the bill has already reached trillions of dollars of lost economic activity and tens of millions out of work. The material pain may go beyond economic insecurity. Many Americans face the real prospect of food shortages.
Sweden, however, has forged its own path. The government is emphasizing voluntary action over government mandates. Elementary schools and businesses, including bars, cafés, restaurants and gyms, are open. The government has urged people to act responsibly and follow social distancing guidelines.
Stockholm has reasoned that COVID-19 will require sustained interventions, even under optimistic timelines for the development of a vaccine. If true, the economic hardship and sacrifices to civil liberties involved in long-term societal shutdowns would become unjustifiable. So, the Swedish Public Health Authority has elected to pursue what it regards as a feasible goal of slowing the spread to prevent the overwhelming of its health care system while protecting the most vulnerable populations.
Commentators in the media have accused the Swedes of pursuing a risky coronavirus virus strategy or of Russian roulette-style COVID strategy that has caused an alarming acceleration of the pandemic, triggering a death spike leading to "10 times the number of deaths than its Nordic neighbors have seen.
These commentaries seem to extrapolate too much from a narrow view of the data coming out of Sweden or are under the false impression that Sweden is not socially distancing and simply allowing the disease to spread.

In our state over 50% of the deaths have been in rest homes or other long care facilities.
Mandatory Euthanasia for Elderly Coronavirus Victims in Sweden
Last week I posted Vlads interview with a Swedish doctor named Jon Tallinger, who drew a lot of attention in Sweden when he blew the whistle on the health services policies towards elderly coronavirus victims. Instead of giving them oxygen treatment which might actually enable them to survive the infection nursing homes are required to administer morphine, which inhibits their breathing even further, and are forbidden to send coronavirus patients to the hospital.
This is, for all practical purposes, a program of deliberate euthanasia.
As a follow-up, in the video below Dr. Tallinger interviews a nursing-home nurse named Latifa Löfvenberg, who has personally witnessed the treatment of elderly coronavirus patients. Ms. Löfvenberg has courageously agreed to speak publicly about what she has seen, and is willing to testify in a court of law if necessary.
Many thanks to Vlad Tepes for uploading this video:

A resounding NO to the “Swedish way”. Compared to similar countries, they are failing badly with it. See DoughtyOne’s CoVid statistic thread for the best data.
Swedish mitigation?
NO.
Theyre doing distinctly worse with that strategy.
How can they even do that — make arrests? Lockdown isn’t a law; it’s a guideline.
I’d say the flu season model, with a few extra precautions for the most at risk.
And God created woman and it was good. Thank you God!
Whats the alternative? The virus isnt going away until mass immunity is gained. The death toll plays out fast The Curve or it plays out slow Flatten the Curve but the end result will be almost the same.
The lockdowns were intended to slow the spread not stop it.
The rise in death count and hence per capita deaths will start slow and taper off far sooner than the US where we are going to 2 years or so to let it spread. Currently the US has saved about 20,000 lives versus Sweden on a population adjusted basis. There is no evidence the lockdowns were the reason for it. It may well be that the US didnt let its old people die like Sweden did.
All the scary hockey stick graphs didnt happen and were not going to happen. The use of undefined inconsistent case fatality rates is pure BS.
Agreed.
So why won’t the powers that be throw resources and PPE at nursing homes, the vunerable, those shoulder to shoulder in prisons?
The "alternative" is exactly what the US is doing, and with which I agree completely.
When this started, we had very, very little knowledge of the specifics of the disease, of tests to detect it, or much of anything else. We have gained ALL of that in an unimaginably short time span. We now have treatment regimes and drug therapies that ARE helping prevent deaths, and we WILL shortly have a (and probably more than one) vaccine....no "herd immunity" necessary, thank you (although "some" of that will indeed happen).
Thank GOD Trump was (and is) President. He has delivered a masterful performance. Those who fault him are simply either idiots or liars. May he win a second term in a landslide, and may Pence be his successor for two terms.
Ok. Lockdown until the vaccine. Never mind there has never been a Corona virus vaccine just stay in your hidey hole thats your choice. Everyone else be released from tyranny.
Ignore the facts and try to justify the actions you supported. Sweden is doing no worse than the US. You surrendered to tyranny and the virus didnt go away. So now you wait for a vaccine.
Swedens immediate neighbors Norway, Denmark, Finland (all three embracing the lockdown model) have a combined population of 16.755 million & covid-19 death rate of 905.
Sweden with a population of 10.183 million has a current death rate of 2669. Approx. three times higher in a population that is a third less than the combined population of her three neighbors.
“In our state over 50% of the deaths have been in rest homes or other long care facilities.”
Yours and EVERYWHERE else, including countries!
So what did we do? We locked down entire countries and shipped infected people back to nursing homes to try and kill the rest of the residents. (Cuomo).
Think about it. I remember when I first heard about coronavirus in the USA. Washington State. Oh my. Then I heard everyone infected was from ONE NURSING HOME!
As cases mounted, they still seemed to be related to this one nursing home.
ALARM BELLS should have been going off all across the country! What did we do? Lock down the entire country and IGNORE our nursing homes (just like we always have done).
SWUCK FEDEN!
I said NOWHERE "lockdown until vaccine". NOT ONCE. Take your intellectual dishonest talk and stuff it.
DoughtyOne’s charts tell a different story.
“In our state over 50% of the deaths have been in rest homes or other long care facilities.”
All attributable to China & WHO, NOT Trump.
Future deaths can be prevented, but in the absence of a vaccine, let me put it bluntly:
Whatever happens, it’s God’s way and nothing humans can rationally perform can do anything about it.
I did type “rationally”...
