Washington (AFP) - US President Donald Trump suggested he may seek damages from China over the coronavirus pandemic which began in the Chinese city of Wuhan and spread around the world, prompting a furious response from Beijing on Tuesday.
"We are not happy with China," Trump said at a White House briefing Monday. "We are not happy with that whole situation because we believe it could have been stopped at the source.
In Beijing, a foreign ministry spokesman on Tuesday accused US politicians of "telling barefaced lies", without naming Trump specifically, and of ignoring their "own serious problems".
"American politicians have repeatedly ignored the truth and have been telling barefaced lies," Geng Shuang told reporters at a regular press briefing.
"They have only one objective: shirk their responsibility for their own poor epidemic prevention and control measures, and divert public attention."
Geng said US politicians should "reflect on their own problems and find ways to contain the outbreak as quickly as possible."

I take the opposite view. It would be awesome. The backlash against globalism and offshoring would be huge and personally I'd love to see it. The economic boom of all the production facilities starting up again and Americans getting good jobs starting up would be fantastic. Do it!!!
The only thing our enemies fear is a tariff and American protectionism unleashed. Everything else is BS.
China is going to be forced to shut up and come to terms with making some changes, or back up their belligerent words with actions. There are steps we need to take against the CCP that we will not back down on. I’m not saying we should push them into a war, but we need to be willing to push them in areas that make war a possibility. We should have never been in the position we are now, but we have to deal with reality. They are already at war with us, and it’s time we start fighting back.

“Australia’s position is very clear that we believe it is entirely reasonable ... for there to be a genuine inquiry and investigation into the cause of the loss of life of hundreds of thousands of people around the world,” Birmingham told the ABC on Tuesday.

We need to start taking action now. We aren’t going to decouple from China, and start manufacturing things here in the US overnight; or without sacrificing in the short term. It’s too late for that. Trump needs to increase tariffs on Chinese goods, and use the funds for grants and loans to companies that manufacture in the USA. Wall street should be investing in the US, not our enemies.
I take your view as well - it would be amazing to see ALL manufacturing (especially the pharmaceuticals) back in America. The industry, the jobs, the independence would be so welcomed!
All I am saying is some caution is required. I hope they are already making plans or have even started with the much needed medicine. I can’t imagine the backlash if China decided to further damage the president by cutting off people’s medicine. The media would instinctively join China in blaming the president and all you would see and hear about would be more blood on the president’s hands because he angered China. It wouldn’t surprise me if this was already planned for the fall.
