As global governments grapple with how to unlock economies without triggering another round of coronavirus infections, some economists are recommending that age should be used to determine who returns to work first. While the freezing of activity from Mumbai to Chicago is credited with saving lives, the downsides are evident in the International Monetary Fund's warning of the worst global recession in almost a century.
How to balance lives and livelihoods is drawing the attention of economists, and a growing cohort propose authorities should first remove restrictions on those deemed at lowest risk of death or hospital admittance from the infection. That means the youngest are activated first, while more venerable groups remain sheltered until either a vaccine can be administered or the rest of the population develops sufficient immunity. One calculation of fatalities from the disease by Imperial College in London is for 0.03% of those in their 20s, compared to over 5% among the over 70s.
"Age- and morbidity-related restrictions would allow a rapid return of economic activity," according to David Mackie, chief European economist at JPMorgan Chase in London. "If mixing between the elderly and the less vulnerable younger populations can be sufficiently reduced, the economy and society can get back to work quickly."

The old will not remain imprisoned for 18 months waiting for a vaccine or herd immunity that may or may not occur.
Put old people on cruise ships.
Use them as sandbags.
I am over 65 and I wont take their damn vaccine even when its ready if EVER!! Flu vaccines every damn year turn out to be for the wrong strain, no vaccine for HIV, no vaccine for the common cold, no vaccine for Ebola, so what the hell have Bill Gates & Fauci been doing???
Children should not be hiding from CV.
Why not allow people to make their own risk assessment? Proceed at your own risk.
There should be a comprehensive test of high schoolers to see how many have already had it.
I bet a lot have without knowing.
There should be a comprehensive test of high schoolers to see how many have already had it.
There should be a lot more testing, period. Im very frustrated that Trump and Birx have said only the sick need testing. First off, theyre not practicing what they preach. They themselves are getting tested , but theyre not sick! They get tested so they can keep coming to work. The rest of us should be allowed to test as well, so we can get back to our lives
Most of Congress qualifies for sheltering.
Sweden did not close its elementary schools. How are the children in the schools doing? In the US day care centers for people who are working in essential industries are still open. How are the children in those day care centers doing?
locked down people over 60
Do you even recognize the dystopia this creates?
For the children of people working in essential industries, that should say.
Most states just have a stay home except for essential errands like shopping, healthcare etc. No one has been locked down. I'm 70 and the only change to my schedule of the past few years is takeout from our favorite restaurant that closed for now. Otherwise shopping, Dr appointments, post office and some fast food as usual. Some my age are not party animals and find 'stay at home' kind of a normal status quo. I don't think an enforced lock down of a specific age group would fly.
Worse than wrecking the economy and shafting every K-12 school kid?
Yeah, better every human in the country suffer than only the group most at risk who in those circumstances would have had more help and options than they do now.
Lock down is the popular term a lot of places so if you prefer, restrictions on that age group without throwing people out of work.
So, you’re a year older than I am, I know what’s the norm and wearing a mask when I’m out makes perfect sense along with limiting we old fogies to not going to group gatherings but half the people in the area being out of work doesn’t.
I think you do not understand
I do not advocate imprisoning healthy people
I advocate freeing all healthy people
Of all ages
Being 60+ is not a disease
We will not accept being the new lepers under benevolent jailers
The fearful among the old may hibernate away in a miserable but long existence.
Those among the old who value quality of life over quantity may choose fewer but fuller days of LIFE.
Let them choose!
But I see your point. When, "let them eat cake" just won't do, "let them die" works just fine.
Look how much has changed as we learned to treat this mess. Keeping the most at risk people away from the risk as much as possible by limiting their being with groups and having them wear masks at least until we know how to treat the sick rather than sticking them on a machine that speeds their death is a far, very far, cry from "imprisoning" people.
Have a lovely day
