More deaths, no benefit from malaria drug in VA virus study By MARILYNN MARCHIONE

This Monday, April 6, 2020 file photo shows an arrangement of hydroxychloroquine pills in Las Vegas. According to a study released on Tuesday, April 21, 2020, the malaria drug widely touted by President Donald Trump for treating the new coronavirus showed no benefit in an analysis of its use in U.S. veterans hospitals. There were more deaths among those given hydroxychloroquine versus standard care, researchers report. ( Hydroxychloroquine made no difference in the need for a breathing machine, either.

Researchers did not track side effects, but noted hints that hydroxychloroquine might have damaged other organs. The drug has long been known to have potentially serious side effects, including altering the heartbeat in a way that could lead to sudden death.

Earlier this month, scientists in Brazil stopped part of a hydroxychloroquine study after heart rhythm problems developed in one-quarter of people given the higher of two doses being tested.

Many doctors have been leery of the drug.

At the University of Wisconsin, Madison, “I think we’re all rather underwhelmed” at what’s been seen among the few patients there who’ve tried it, said Dr. Nasia Safdar, medical director of infection control and prevention.

Patients asked about it soon after Trump started promoting its use, “but now I think that people have realized we don’t know if it works or not” and needs more study, said Safdar, who had no role in the VA analysis.

The NIH and others have more rigorous tests underway.

Heck, you can’t get tested until you’re hacking up a lung much less get hospitalized or any treatment. Yes, by then, it’s pretty much too late.

The groups differed significantly in risk factors, with the drug given to those with the higher risk. The correlation of outcomes with the drug is therefore due to “reverse causality.” Essentially, the risk factors caused the use of the drug.

Exactly.

This is baloney. I am prescribed 400mg HCQ as a DMARD for RA. I am in the wrong age-group for the CCP. As I understand it, 400mg and 600mg were the two dosages tested. When prescribed HCQ was told that it was the max recommened dosage. And I have yet to hear of a scientific study that makes broad assumptions not based on testing or investigating before sounding off.

I think that is right. The earlier the better.

Thousands of doctors are using it now.

Turkey claimed it cut down pneumonia.

Not confident in the reporting.

Interesting disclosure information in the study re authors:

If you give the drug to those with the worst symptoms, you will get more deaths from that group than those who are not critical to begin with.

The phrase used by Ms. Marchione "...the malaria drug widely touted by President Donald Trump..." in the first sentence, makes me mighty suspicious especially since I've read a number of stories by those in charge of nursing homes or prisons where a virus could spread rapidly....had been using (hydroxy)Chloroquine successfully.

It doesn’t say if it was given in combination with zinc which seemed to be the combination...

Its not just one. You dont have to chase anything down. I listed a Dr on the front line who told his experience..he is by far not the only one.

Btw..if you are a Dr..and i doubt you are..there is a Dr who is on tbe front line..has seen over 1000 patients in nyc and new orleans...100 have died..and he is willing to provide help by text to Drs who need help

If anyone needs the number for a consult its on the texags site.

If zinc sulfate is not given with Hydroxychloroquine then their studies are meaningless.

This!

I believe the other drug to complete this treatment for CoVid-19 is azithromycin. If just the HCQ is administered without the other 2, it's useless, if not counter-productive.

CA....

OK so you have some Drs who say HCQ does not work but they do not come close to the number who say it has worked.

What I do see is a concerted effort to downplay the drugs efficacy by pounding on POSSIBLE side effects, as if every other drug hasn’t more and even worse side effects.

The reason I believe it works is simple.

1. There are far, far too many examples of it working.

2. The media are far too invested in wanting to make sure it isn’t seen as being effective only because BAD ORANGE MAN recommended it.

I am 100% confident I will be proven to be right.

It will work for some..and it will work better the quicker it is given

It will not work for all. It will cause problems in many

And just like the infectious diseases expert said who survived..he has no idea if it helped when he took it.

Face the fact that Drs who say it hasnt helped patients mean what they say. Drs who say it has helped patients cant be sure they arent ones who would have survived anyway

Give it to those on ventilators to determine how many survive will give you clearer perspective

Its not a panacea..its a tool thatmay or may not work for you..but if you want it..you better get it before you need a ventilator

Btw..here is what a Dr on the frontline said..one who knows this is not just a cold when you test postive and i have no doubt he would never post on this site it is just a cold

Trumps drug from day 1

If admitted to hospital gilead drug
If cytokine storm genentech drug

Drs on the front line...MANY ..are seeing the drug is not the panacea in all stages of patient

Your thinking is totally wrong. Compared to the many THOUSANDS of those who have taken the HCQ with ALL of them having it prescribed by Drs, those who claim to DOESN’T work number in the less than 100 while those who claim success number in the many thousands.

What are the chances that all those THOUSANDS who have been given the HCQ would have had the same positive results had they taken nothing?

The answer is few to possibly none.

In response to another of your posts it has ALWAYS been the case that HCQ is far more effective when given early on when China Virus is first diagnosed. This drug doesn’t need to be a CURE in and of itself as long as it mitigates the China Virus symptoms and allows for the bodies own immune system to deal with it.

And there is the quote I was waiting for.

“That’s just an observational study. It’s not a clinical study. It was done on a small number of veterans; sadly, those of whom were in the last stages of life, and the drug was given to them.”
