Opening churches, stores a priority for Americans, Rasmussen Poll says

A new survey shows that Americans want gathering in homes and churches to be allowed right away when the lockdown ends.

Asked to prioritize the reopening of various activities and whether it should happen right away, half of the respondents said that allowing people to gather in small groups at someone’s home should happen right away, and 35 percent said churches and other religious gatherings, according to a Scott Rasmussen survey.

Thirty-five percent also said that reopening retail stores is a top priority for them and 31 percent said the same about schools.

Only 21 percent felt that reopening bars and restaurants should happen right away and 14 percent said the same about major league sports events and stadium concerts.

The study of 1,200 registered voters was conducted from April 9 to 11.

“These results suggest that voters are interested in the broader questions of reopening society, rather than narrow concerns about the economy,” the survey report remarks.

The poll shows significant partisan differences in the priorities of Americans. “The most dramatic concerns the reopening of churches and religious services,” it says. “Forty-seven percent of Republicans believe that should be a top priority while only 29 percent of Democrats agree.”

In a survey conducted a week earlier, Rasmussen found that 23 percent say that the biggest impact they have felt from the pandemic is boredom, depression and isolation.

A survey released Saturday by Rasmussen suggests that more Americans (45 percent) think that the nation will suffer through a long recession when the lockdown ends than those who believe the economy will bounce back quickly (34 percent).

“It’s important to note that these dynamics are broadly consistent with pre-pandemic attitudes,” the poll noted. “Republicans were far more optimistic about the economy, Democrats more pessimistic, and Independent voters in between.”

President Donald Trump last week announced plans for states to gradually end the lockdown and allow businesses to reopen, beginning with states that are not hard hit by the COVID-19 outbreak.

“We are opening up our country. And we have to do that,” Trump said during a coronavirus briefing at the White House. “Americans want to be open. As I have said for some time now, a national shutdown is not a sustainable long-term solution.”

He explained, “To preserve the health of our citizens, we must also preserve the health and functioning of our economy. Over the long haul, you can’t do one without the other. It cannot be done. To keep vital supply chains running, they have to be taken care of. The balance is delicate. We want to deliver food and medical supply. We must have a working economy, and we want to get it back very, very quickly. And that’s what is going to happen. I believe it will boom.”

Trump’s plan involves three phases. In the first phase, gyms, restaurants, sports venues and theaters would reopen with necessary precautions and social distancing still in place. The second phase would allow non-essential travel and reopening of schools and bars with precautionary measures. And the third and the final phase would lift restrictions on vulnerable people and allow people to return to work.

Business is running well with less disease in a few countries with people who have more common sense with respect to the epidemic. South Korea has dense populations. If we could do the same and mind our manners, we could see more economic activity, too. Otherwise, the disease itself will shut us down. Can’t run a business with too few employees or customers.

Wear a mask. This is not a fashion show. Epidemic masks were invented in the West.

The reaction to COVID has ripped off a lot of ‘masks’ - those of us paying attention knew what was lurking underneath, but now it’s out in the open for all to see ... how the DemonRats want a police state, the tyranny of Dem Governors, to name two.

What else has become obvious is how afraid people are - they are afraid of death and it’s very sad to see. Those of us who believe in God and trust Him, are not afraid. Do I want to die of COVID? No, but if I get it and the outcome is bad, I am comforted by my faith & unafraid. This is why reopening churches is important ... and why DemonRats don’t think it is. America is sliding more rapidly all the time down the slippery slope of godlessness and with COVID, it is showing up in ways that people can see.

Let the dems stay in their homes and out of our churches.

No one will force them to go to any church. They can stay in their homes to “cower and shelter” as long as they want to.

Let us, go back to our churches and celebrate with our church families.

I’m shocked at how easy, without hardly any resistance so many churches bowed down and kissed Caesar’s ring.

There is no such thing as assembling together without assembling together.
There is no such thing as “virtual church”.
We encouraged our elderly to stay home but I haven’t missed a Sunday.

Oh people have such high opinions of themselves and how they will act in the face of persecution but they can’t even follow the Lords Word when they live in a Republic which guarantees the right to assembly.

Really, Republicans, lets get out there and live! Let the fearful commit soft suicide. The best we can do for them is lead the way.

I have been permanently traumatized by the church’s response. I’ll go in but I am more cynical. I thought better of my church. Very disappointed

To be honest, and because I’m selfish, I am most interested in two things:
1. Gyms, especially gyms with pools.
2. Recreational sports.

Gyms, when run well (and I wouldn’t join one that wasn’t) are highly clean; people wipe their equipment before and after use, people aren’t generally too close to each other. WHen this started, my gyms cancelled classes like aerobics, and shut down every other piece of equipment.

Recreational sports. I didn’t understand why we had to close tennis courts. Even in doubles, if you are within 6 feet of your partner, you are doing it wrong. And it is 4 people that probably live together or hang out anyway.

SOftball? 10 people spread out over a 900-square-foot field. While up to 4 other people run around bases that are 90 feet apart.

Spray the ball after every play if you think it is important; I doubt you are going to spread COVID on a softball.

I guess football might be worse, except you are wearing uniforms and helmets. Soccer there is some bumping, but people deserve to take thier own risks.

Sure, I want business back to business. But i want to start with the stupidity, like shutting down a beach that has square miles of space, rather than simply requiring that no family put camp down within 20 feet of another. Heck, just go out on the beach and put up some markers, set aside 40-square-foot patches, and say “one family per patch”.

Gun ranges? Who is within 6 feet of another person shooting a gun? Not selling me seeds for my garden? Our local Microcenter had people text in when they arrived, and then they would put them in a list, and text back when it was OK to enter. We can do this.
