The news media business was shaky before the coronavirus started spreading across the country last month. Since then, the economic downturn that put more than 22 million Americans out of work has led to pay cuts, layoffs and shutdowns at many news outlets, including weeklies like Seven Days in Burlington, Vt., and Gannett, the nation's largest newspaper chain.
Finding a sizable audience has not been a problem for publishers. Hunger for news in a time of crisis has sent droves of readers to many publications. But with businesses paused or closed and no longer willing or able to pay for advertisements a crucial part of the industrys support system has cracked.
Hard data on job losses is not yet available, but Jed Kolko, the chief economist at Indeed.com, said new listings for jobs in the media and communications sector had fallen 35 percent in the 60 days before April 3, compared with the same period last year. The decline in postings for all jobs was less drastic, at 24 percent, suggesting that the pandemic has had a greater effect on the news media industry than on other businesses, Mr. Kolko added.
The New York Times is continuing to gauge the pandemics effects on newspapers, magazines and digital media companies through interviews with executives, newsroom employees and union leaders across the country. All told, an estimated 33,000 employees of news media companies in the United States have been laid off, furloughed or had their pay reduced since the arrival of the coronavirus.

Add with the media outlets Hollywood studios and network TV staff getting layed off.
We have to. All victories are not theirs. In many ways they have cut off their nose to spite their face.
That said I want an end to I declared an emergency now I get unlimited dictatorship theory.
We have the ballot box. But thats a long wait for our civil rights back.
They could learn to code. I understand you can work from home.
Anyone who goes to the N YTimes for news wont find it there, at least not about anything that is remotely political. A novel corona virus that is killing many should not be political, but rags like the NYT have made it so.
Brian Stelter “I crawled in bed and cried....”
////////////////////
29 mentions in the Holy Bible of creeping and crawling things such as
Genesis 6:7
And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
Leviticus 11:43
Ye shall not make yourselves abominable through any crawling thing which crawleth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby.
Leviticus: 11:44
neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Thought of poor baby Stelter and these passages. A creepy crawling thing for sure.
Nothing in this universe has only one side.

As the elites like to tell “the little people”;: LEARN TO CODE
And just who gives a shiite?
Wow! Look! A silver lining!
That's an understatement. This is how the left is becoming a big "winner" in all of this being the ghouls that they are. Some things have benefited our side though.
He cried so hard he woke up his wife and her boyfriend in the next room.
Bye! :)
“Gee, that’s a shame.”
The needle on the ol’ give-a-crap-o-meter must be stuck. Not even quivering.
When one looks long enough, often a silver lining can be found.
Yes.
Of course media would never provide this context, it puts things in clearer perspective.
Can you ‘spin’ computer code? Spinning facts to suit the narrative is the most important skill set for today’s ‘journalists’.
So we take all the readers when there is no advertising and when the advertisers come back we will be the only place to advertise, love it
