Once upon a time we lived in a country where people knew there were risks to living. That was before the rise of the federal agencies striving to eliminate all chance of sickness or death.
Why should we remain closed until a vaccine is developed? It took 30 years from the development of the Polio vaccine and mass public inoculations, to eliminate polio in the US.
Vaccines for chickenpox, measles (both kinds), mumps, whooping cough, scarlet fever, etc. didn't exist until most of us were well into adulthood and had suffered through each (except scarlet fever). 57,000 people in the world died of measles in 2018 even though there is a vaccine.
We still don't have a vaccine for HIV/AIDS. 700,000 Americans have died from HIV/AIDS since 1981.
We didn't shut down for any of these. We identified behaviors that added to risk, we minimized contact with people who were sick, we isolated the vulnerable.
We certainly did NOT shut down the entire economy based on a pipe dream of protecting everyone, no matter the cost.
If we had, we wouldn’t be here now - there wouldn’t be a country!
1-It may never come.
2-It may not be a "vaccine" just like the "Flu Vaccine" is NOT a "vaccine".
3-We need TESTING and wide availability of TREATMENT, like HCQ.
4-If we wait 12-18 months for a "vaccine" it will be too late to save the U.S. and global economy.
HEAR, HEAR!
Don’t think hardly anyone is talking about shutting down until there is a vaccine.
We might not get fully back to normal until there is a vaccine.
Over 40 years HIV has killed 1400 a month.
Coved is killing more every day.
Yeah we cant lock down till we get a vaccine.
But dont kid yourself about the toll its going to take.
Were at war and we havent fully realized it yet.
Before the end of 2020 China will have firmly established pariah-state status. They wont take kindly to it.
Shutdown until we have decent testing in place like all the other countries? Not nonsense.
I was for the shut-down back in early March, when it appeared that there would be spikes of people needing hospital beds and ventilators that far exceeded capacity.
I am long since past that opinion, not only because I think the shut-downs helped to soften the spikes, but also because it was obvious the estimates and models were far too severe.
But as happens with a lot of people in government and particularly in bureaucracies, decision making is habitual.
A lot of these people forgot the whole reason this thing looked scarey in the first place. It is not the amount of cases that matter (in terms of shut-downs), it’s the amount of people who would have needed hospital beds
The flu is caused by many viral strains, therefore the annual one doesn’t work against every single one of them, it’s actual a gamble by the professionals in hopes that the strains they estimate to be most common are protected against. No amount of flu shots convinces me not to be cautious, especially in indoor public areas like the mall or store.
You are correct. It’s a classic straw man argument.
“This thing no one is saying is a TERRIBLE idea!!”
Fauci was on TV saying no concerts, sporting events, bars, limited restaurants, etc. That is no where near normal.
HIV isn’t airborne. HIV doesn’t live outside the human body on surfaces for very long either. Both the Flu and COVID-19 do. There aren’t very many practical ways to totally avoid the thing.
You have to decide how many people you are willing to have die before measures were put in place again to bring down the number of deaths.
That’s certainly something government leaders are dealing with at this time - how many should die if things keep going the way they are. i.e. what further loss of life is acceptable.
And even when there is a vaccine, like the influenza, thousands will die from coronavirus...hey but it only cost us upwards of 10 Trillion Dollars..or almost half of our present debt.
Something to feel all warm and fuzzy about.
And even when there is a vaccine, like the influenza, thousands will die from coronavirus EVERY YEAR anyhow.
#OUAN Open up America Now!!
We don’t know that COVID-19 will play out like the flu, with the flu having so many different viruses causing it. But the key is that most diseases become less fatal in an overall population when there is some form of exposure to the germs in most of the population, whether that includes a vaccine, or recovery from the disease itself. With no exposure, a disease is much more lethal than when most people have exposure.
