As a general rule you can be assured that the less substantive the degree the more the holder will insist on the title Dr.

Amen to that. My students know that I dislike being called “Dr.” for the very reason you cited. It’s “Mr.” or “Professor” in formal settings.

I think there’s a similar phenomenon with academic garb. The more brilliant and garish the costume, the weaker the credential. If my president ever goes to the ridiculous practice of wearing four velvet hashes on the sleeve in order to lord it over mere Ph.D.s (he hasn’t), then all the velvet stuff on my gown comes off for good. Infernal stuff catches on door handles, etc.

Reminds me of a Ed.D. here in the Tennessee backwoods who drove around with vanity plates inscribed with “DR. SUE”. As if anyone gave a care!

That is my limited experience.

I had the pleasure as a masters student to rub elbows with incredible Phd Physicists, all of whom asked to be called by their first names.

OTOH, EVERY phd educator and sociologist I met (not many) demanded the adjective “Dr.”
