There are quite a few things Ive been seeing all over my social media feeds ever since the spread of COVID-19 forced everyone to social distance. There are the jokes about no longer wearing a bra, comments about being confused over what day it is and comparisons to Anne Frank hiding in an attic.
One of these things is not like the other.
The US government recommending individuals to practice social distancing in order to prevent the spread of a deadly virus is not at all similar to being forced into hiding to avoid the impending threat of a state-sponsored genocide. In fact, to make the comparison is egregiously offensive. So why do I keep seeing people doing just that?
On Twitter, if you search Anne Frank now, you will find an abundance of users tweeting about how they now know exactly how Anne Frank felt after a week in quarantine. Some of these even go as far as to say that Anne Frank had it much better than us right now. And I feel like I am losing my mind.
There are so many things wrong with this; let me count the ways.
First, timing. Anne Franks family was in hiding for a total of 25 months before they were discovered by the Gestapo in August 1944. Most of us are still in our first weeks or month of social distancing. Fourteen days versus 761 days. Not exactly the same.
Another variable are the spaces in which people are stuck. In the case of the Franks, eight people were stuck inside a small annex that had approximately 450 square feet of floor space.

Not sure where anyone could come to that conclusion. We are at nation of the slang word for multiple cats.
A clowder?
He referred to the slang term, not proper usage of the noun clowder...
I’m a little more blunt -—
Yes, we live in a nation of pussies.
Great book.. Dutch Girl: Audrey Hepburn and World War II Kindle Edition
by Robert Matzen (Author), Luca Dotti (Foreword) Format:
When Audrey was 11 years old, the Germans began their occupation of the Netherlands. As a child, life didn’t change much for her but as time went on and the restrictions gotten worse her life began to change and she had to give up her much loved ballet lessons. In 1944, her life took a turn for the worse when the Allies started bombing the town that she lived in. She and her family spent much of their time in the cellar of their home hoping to survive while bombs exploded all around them. Following that came the ‘hunger winter’. There wasn’t enough food and many people starved to death. Audrey commented that this was the first time she had ever seen starvation of such a large scale. She had a lot of determination to go from a starving young girl to a Hollywood icon in such a short period of time.
The writer really ought to know better than the falsehood of discovered by the Gestapo. The family was ratted out & discovered. Huge difference, IMO.
Quarantine would be a walk in the park for a Saturation Diver.
Ha ha.
“...comparisons to Anne Frank hiding in an attic...”
Seriously?
Americans are being introduced to sacrifice, duty and privation. If it was totally up to people like that.. we’d still be a British colony
Interesting link. Not so much for the diving stuff but for the watches.
As far as a comparison to Anne Frank? That seems a bit absurd across the board but this is America and people will say dumb stuff because they are dumb asses. Too few have no knowledge about the Constitution, Civics or Economics. They so easily give up their rights it’s stunning. A more proper analogy if you want to mention the WWII era would be the comparison between the sheep who will bow to all this illegal activity by Governors etc. to the Jews who stood by while they were controlled.
