Nope. 7 out of 1600 is 0.438 percent and NOT 0.004 percent. What PISS POOR WRITING!

Where did the tests come from, China?

They also discovered that 1,600 people have been infected with Covid-19 since the start of the outbreak. Of these cases, there were only seven deaths, indicating a fatality rate of just 0.004 per cent, which is significantly lower than other countries, including the UK.

The findings were made during Iceland’s rigorous testing campaign, conducted with the help of Reykjavik-based biopharmaceutical company deCODE genetics, which has seen 10 per cent of the 364,413 population swabbed, something yet to be achieved by any other nation.

...

Should I conclude that the addition of antibody testing would make the number higher and more accurate?

How can they know that?

Seen this previously, this is daily mail and they frequently mislead with the title.

Only 1600 people have tested positive for the virus, half of those show no symptoms.

The Daily Mail is the equivalent of the National Enquirer.

While the National Enquirer got the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal right, they have a rather piss-poor track record of reporting something truthful.

Daily Mail should be viewed through the same lens as the National Enquirer, IMO.

If this story exists elsewhere, I'd really like to see it.

HALF of people have the disease without realizing it.
Some people have stronger genes then other people.

If there are no symptoms there is no disease.

which has seen 10 per cent of the 364,413 population swabbed, something yet to be achieved by any other nation.

Let's do some numbers so people can understand what they are actually talking about.

The population of Iceland is is about 350,000 people.

So ten percent would be 35,000.

The US has 330,000,000 people.

Ten percent would be 33,000,000.

Slight difference of scale.

“Random testing in America? “

soon ... but not the brutal nasal swab, but instead serum testing of IGM/IGG; right now that test is available via venous blood draw, but soon a finger-stick test will be widely available, at which point random testing of a statistically valid sample will be possible for the U.S. ... that data will eventually help to determine when some threshold of “herd immunity” has been reached ...

“Iceland has tested one-tenth of its population for coronavirus at random and found that half of people have the disease without realising.”

Is this statement correct? Or is it really that half the people are unaffected by Covid-19, due to immune systems that take care of it.

sigh...I wrote along reply and lost it, so here’s a link to the Iceland data: https://www.covid.is/data

I’m reasonably certain of two things: Both the hospital system and the private outfit (deCODE genetics) are testing for positive cases, not antibodies.

And, the comment about half of those tested being asymptomatic applies to the results of the deCODE testing (only 150 positives in all so far) and not to the hospital testing. (That’s based on a comment from deCODE that I read somewhere over a week ago when they had less than 100 positive readings.)

50% test positive but had not had symptoms? I wonder if the test kit used in Iceland is not showing valid results. There are a number of covid-19 kits from different sources and few have been tested to prove they are effective due the rush to have kits.

Iceland has a small population and they tend to be very compliant to government edicts so probably have self isolated to the point the virus has not touched many. So why the 50% showing up in testing?

From the article: “An estimated 50 per cent of those infected with the virus, the company found, do not show any symptoms. “

That very likely means that of the 150 positives that DeCODE identified, half were asymptomatic.

If so, it would not apply to the 1,550 positives identified by the hospital system, nor would it imply that half the people in Iceland are running around infected but not showing symptoms, nor that half of them have already been infected and recovered without knowing it.

All it means is that once you find a positive case by random testing, there’s a 50/50 chance the person wasn’t experiencing symptoms at the time tested. In two days, that might change. In two weeks, that person might be dead.

This article is stupid.

First, they praise iceland for doing 36,000 tests, 10% of a tiny population
They fault uk for running 316,000 test, 9 times as many.
And 7 deaths out of 1600 positive cases is 0.4%, not 0.004%. 0.4% is still 4 times the flu rate.

On the good side, 10% of their random slection tested positive, a great coverage for a place that wasnt sure they had many at all.

On the other hand, here are the figures for Iceland that have been reported:

Confirmed: 1,701
Deaths: 8
Recovered: 889

Which suggests that more than half have not been sick long enough to have died. We’ll see how that holds up. Best of luck to them.

South Korea had stats slightly lower than that at one point, was widely touted for their comprehensive detection, and since the rate has climbed to over 2%. It’ll still be low, but not the original 0.4% widely touted. 4 weeks after the disease growth was brought to heel, about 20% are listed as still sick.

We'll soon be doing that, I'll bet we find out similar. So Covid death rates will be like .0001% - that's gonna hurt.
