Florida Gov. DeSantis mulls reopening schools: Coronavirus 'doesn't seem to threaten' kids
The Hill ^ | 4/10/20 | Marty Johnson

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Thursday signaled that there was still a possibility that Florida schools could reopen in May after being closed since March due to the coronavirus outbreak.

“We’re going to look at the evidence and make a decision," DeSantis said of the possibility of children returning to schools in the state, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

"If it’s safe, we want kids to be in school. ... Even if it’s for a couple of weeks, we think there would be value in that," he continued.

CNN reported that DeSantis added that he didn't think anyone under 25 had died of the virus.

"This particular pandemic is one where, I don't think nationwide there's been a single fatality under 25. For whatever reason it just doesn't seem to threaten, you know, kids," DeSantis said.

"And we lose in Florida between five and 10 kids a year for the flu. This one, for whatever reason, much more dangerous if you're 65 and plus than the flu, no doubt about that. If you're younger, it just hasn't had an impact, so that should factor into how we're viewing this. I think the data on that has been 100 percent consistent," he continued. "I've not seen any deviation on that."

Very interesting no comment.

Hope your check clears, and keep passing fake news as fact....

This is a place for intellectual discussion, don’t bring fake news, and don’t tell me or have the government tell me how to run my life.

You need to look beyond yourself.
At my kids’ schools most of the nonteaching staff are older people who also live in households with parents and older relatives. Bus drivers have already died from this disease.
The low income kids almost universally live with grandparents.

Run a school system without these staff.
Run it without the kids that have autoimmune diseases and pregnant teachers. Set up a 2 track school system that serves some not all in classroom.

Enjoy the playground.

Either DeSantis gives every teacher a prophylactic dose of hydroxychloroquine, or he will have 65% of the teachers infected with COVID19, and 1 out of 415 of them will be dead. In Florida there are 180,442 teachers in Florida. 433 of them will end up dead of COVID19 under this order.

“I have no fear of this virus.”

Perhaps you should. I used to think the same way, until looking at the cases where people died.

Yes...but you are describing how someone can die in detail which pulls on heartstrings...but people die from all kinds of reasons and we don’t shut down the economy. Flu way way way more dangerous for young and healthy.

Agreed, plus generally adults are better than kids at following the rules, like face masks, gloves, washing hands often etc.

I doubt any school in the country will finish this spring. Even the states that have a low risk. One kids tests positive and the whole thing becomes one huge mistake.

“I’m sure glad I don’t live in Florida.”

I’m glad you don’t live here either - we have enough left wing commies here already. I do live in FL and think DeSantis has been a breath of fresh air compared to most of the drama queen governors and mayors. I was in and out of East Berlin for several years back in the bad ole days, and I’m not sure the DDR/Stasi had anything on much of this country right now.

You do realize the dems are going to try to invoke emergencies over climate change and pull this shit again, right?

"This particular pandemic is one where, I don't think nationwide there's been a single fatality under 25. For whatever reason it just doesn't seem to threaten, you know, kids," DeSantis said.

There have been a number of cases of people under 25 dying of Covid-19. About ten have been under 20. And that's deaths. There have been thousands who got sick but did survive. Maybe DeSantis needs to look into a subject before he pops off about it?

I remember when Free Republic used to be a place where intelligent people held arguments. That was a VERY long time ago.

I remember a time when so-called conservatives did not live on their knees. It was a very short time ago.

On this I agree with you. I don't think we're too far apart on what we think. I don't like the economy being shut down, and don't think it should have been shut down. People die all the time from other stuff. I just think it's foolish to open just the schools while leaving everything else shut down. Open it all up, and get the economy going again, despite the risks of deaths. Start with the jobs and shops and let people work. Don't start with the schools alone.

RIGHT ON! "Bad idea. Kids are little dirt buckets and spread germs. Keep the kids out of school, and let people get back to their jobs. "

The rug rats are low to the ground and "play" in the breeding grounds of??? However, most of the parents are young, relatively speaking. Where there are Grand Parents, it gets complicated.

“I love DeSantis and wish he NEVER shut the state down. This whole thing is the biggest fraud that ever hit America in our history.”

Thank our Surgeon General, NBC and the rest of the MSM.
