Florida Gov. DeSantis mulls reopening schools: Coronavirus 'doesn't seem to threaten' kids
The Hill ^ | 4/10/20 | Marty Johnson

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Thursday signaled that there was still a possibility that Florida schools could reopen in May after being closed since March due to the coronavirus outbreak.

“We’re going to look at the evidence and make a decision," DeSantis said of the possibility of children returning to schools in the state, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

"If it’s safe, we want kids to be in school. ... Even if it’s for a couple of weeks, we think there would be value in that," he continued.

CNN reported that DeSantis added that he didn't think anyone under 25 had died of the virus.

"This particular pandemic is one where, I don't think nationwide there's been a single fatality under 25. For whatever reason it just doesn't seem to threaten, you know, kids," DeSantis said.

"And we lose in Florida between five and 10 kids a year for the flu. This one, for whatever reason, much more dangerous if you're 65 and plus than the flu, no doubt about that. If you're younger, it just hasn't had an impact, so that should factor into how we're viewing this. I think the data on that has been 100 percent consistent," he continued. "I've not seen any deviation on that."

Sounds an awful lot like the flu.

Bad idea. Kids are little dirt buckets and spread germs. Keep the kids out of school, and let people get back to their jobs. The jobs are more important to get the economy going, while we keep the kids safe at home.

Kids have to go home to their parents and grandparents, though.

Can they be asymptomatic carriers? Do we know?

These 'quotes' are from CNN. I have a doubt. I mean, a newborn died of COVID here in Chicago last month. People under 20 have died from this. DeSantis was probably misquoted.

So, kids don’t die from it, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t carriers. Let’s let all the kids pass it around and take it home to mom and dad. Did we forget to mention the teachers who would be exposed?

Kids are little dirt buckets and spread germs.

Which is why they 1) are always sick and 2) develop strong immune systems as adults.

“I don’t think nationwide there’s been a single fatality under 25.”

I don’t think think the governor is correct.

Well, keep your elderly sheltering in place. If mom and/or dad are high risk, continue to home school.

Why dies the entire nation have to stay fetal for a minority of folks who can shelter in place?

You don’t have to worry it won’t happen. The media pressure against would be impossible to overcome regardless of merit.

Kids have adults all around them
Parents, grandparents, Caretakers, bus drivers, teachers, aides, school workers
Then all those people have adults all around them
It is a disturbingly naive statement to base this only on the physiology of the kids

Sounds an awful lot like the flu.

A record-breaking 105 US children have died from flu so far this season, by Gina Yu, CNN, February 21, 2020.

If you’re a teacher or a staffer with a high risk family member, teach from home. Otherwise go back to work.

Mitigation has no doubt prevented med centers in certain areas from being overwhelmed, reducing deaths from lack of adequate treatment. But mitigation for its own sake is insane, when it requires poisoning the economy.

Lib heads will explode over Desantis’ move. Good! It will give other Governors courage to do their own rollouts. Which is what we want. Not fed decrees from Mount Fauci, applicable to all serfs.

Wyoming doesn’t need what Brooklyn needs. Thank God.

I’m sure glad I don’t live in Florida.

1. DeSantis decided that making money from Spring Break was more important than people’s lives, didn’t call it off, and sent potentially infected students back to their homes across the country to spread the disease. Bright idea.

2. DeSantis declared he wouldn’t stop people from gathering in churches. I guess he figures God is going to protect them or something. Fact is, they’re not immune and... yep, they leave church and spread the disease. Another bright idea.

3. Now, he’s mulling over the idea of letting kids back into school because they don’t get the virus as much as older people. As if all young people don’t go HOME to older people who would catch the virus from them.

What the hell happened to him? Did his freaking brain melt down there?
