Petri dish was 20 cm away. That’s less than 8 inches.
Masks lowered the viral load even at that distance.
Thats not the point of wearing a surgical or cloth mask.
The point is they WILL stop large and smaller droplets. THAT will help reduce transmission, particularly if you keep your distance.
Also , you will get a smaller bolus of virus, which is important as we think the viral load you are infected with can make a big difference in your clinical course. Thats why doctors doing things like intubation and bronchoscopy are getting real sick, they get a large viral load from the procedures.
So I guess all of those hospital workers can take theirs off. Think they’ll do it?
8 inches. What a joke. If somebody sneezed or coughed on me from 8 inches, they’d have a lot more to worry about than catching COVID.
Clearly they are MORE effective than no mask at all.
Incorrect. Everything I have read states the average size of Covid-19 is 0.12 microns, on the upper side is 0.16 microns. If an average human hair was the size of a football field, then the Covid-19 virus would be two inches.
Most N-95 masks will filter 95 percent of particles down to 0.2 microns or so. They help in blocking large droplets of virus, but some individual viruses can leak through. So in this article's test, yes, some Covid-19 can get through; but the masks do help block most. Wearing the mask helps prevent ejecting the virus many feet away (not just 6 feet, but up to 26 feet).
“Did they do a comparison with no mask at all? I seem to recall something about the viral load having a lot to do with transmission and actual illness.”
My question as well. FDA site says the following about N-95 masks which seems to indicate they are somewhat helpful but not completely helpful. So you take your chances no matter what you do I guess.
“If worn properly, a surgical mask is meant to help block large-particle droplets, splashes, sprays, or splatter that may contain germs (viruses and bacteria), keeping it from reaching your mouth and nose. Surgical masks may also help reduce exposure of your saliva and respiratory secretions to others.
While a surgical mask may be effective in blocking splashes and large-particle droplets, a face mask, by design, does not filter or block very small particles in the air that may be transmitted by coughs, sneezes, or certain medical procedures. Surgical masks also do not provide complete protection from germs and other contaminants because of the loose fit between the surface of the face mask and your face.”
1 sneezze travels as a fine mist 100 MPH, 6-8 feet, Cough 50 MPH same fine mist 6-8f feet. NO Contacts use glasses, you have to put them in and take out. Long time since I wore them but they can be a pain in the butt at this time.
DO NOT touch any magazine in any office, or ink pen. They have more than the virus on them.
Use two layers of banadana, and a tight furnace filter material .3 Micron in center. At beest get a roll of Viva paper towels, change out often.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hcSCgAD8f8 it helps keep your hands and fingers away from mouth and eyes. They have a link where you can buy 1. Wash often, and dry high heat. Some are using coffee filters. would not recommend it. Tear up a furnace filter for the inner filter.
Big Jets fan, thanks for the laugh.
Bingo! Even N95 allow 5% of it through
Maybe an additional home made liner inside the N95 will be the difference provided air can still be drawn.
By the way those with N95 masks, recycle. 30 minutes in an 160 degree oven will kill the virus assuming it is present.Mine only goes down to 170 but no issues with degrading the rubber bands after trying it.
From the study. LOL
“We do not know whether masks shorten the travel distance of droplets during coughing. “
Here’s the full write up.
That’s funny. I even “get it”, and I don’t do sports of any kind.
Well, they coughed DIRECTLY into Petri dishes. FIVE times. Hardly the same as walking through air that might have been walked through by a sickie five minutes earlier.
As far as I know, ICU doctors are wearing face shields in addition to face masks.
I’m sure it’s a hell better than nothing.
Simple common sense. It may not be 100% effective but I bet it’s 90%!
See #42 (posted by a doctor who is treating corona virus patients).
I’ll take it because it seems to say “common sense”.
They are face condoms, not face IUDs.
Think of this way. You have covid, and your face is a rock hard excited p.... never mind.
“Perfectionism is the enemy of the good.”
Exactly!
It’s like all those three stage pristine controlled clinical studies that take years versus hundreds of “anecdotal” results available right now. We’re in a war, and these idiots want to act like it’s business as usual.
The idea that any mask doesn’t stop the spread of this or any other virus is beyond preposterous and lacks any sense, common or otherwise.
I’m pretty sure that if mask wearing was required of everyone, we could start getting people back to work.
