Statement from the Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas B. Modly, regarding the relief of the Commanding Officer of USS Theodore Roosevelt.
---------------
Good afternoon. Thank you again for your diligence and courage in keeping the American people informed as we all deal with the profound ramifications, and rapid developments, associated with this crisis.
I am here today to inform you that today at my direction, the Commanding Officer of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, Captain Crozier, was relieved of command by the Carrier Strike Group Commander, Rear Admiral Stuart Baker.

I was a Third Class Cook Hick from Alabama and even I knew not to go straight to the Captain of the ship with a complaint.
No, it means using “proper-secure” channels in your chain of command to relay your concerns. Not a frick’n insecure channel that gets your message, and the status of your - Capital Ship - broadcast to the whole world.
Guy deserved it, for being stupid, or a grandstander.
I’d be pissed if a commander didn’t take the well being of those under in his command into hands, but protocols and procedures, are protocols and procedures, for a reason.
He screwed the pooch. Namely, himself, not to mention the Navy.
That is seriously amazing. WTH is wrong with Crozier.
And the fact that the matter was already known to his higher ups and they were already taking care of it.
Offered a job on CNN?
[His letter] unnecessarily raised alarms with the families of our Sailors and Marines with no plan to address those concerns. It raised concerns about the operational capabilities and operational security of the ship that could have emboldened our adversaries to seek advantage, and it undermined the chain of command who had been moving and adjusting as rapidly as possible to get him the help he needed.
For these reasons, I lost confidence in his ability to lead that warship as it continues to fight through this virus, get the crew healthy, so that it can continue to meet its national security requirements. In my judgement relieving him of command was in the best interests of the United States Navy and the nation in this time when the nation needs the Navy to be strong and confident in the face of adversity.
My respect for Modley has grown enormously. He expressed clearly what is expected of the Commanding Officers of our warships and how this CO failed to live up to those expectations.
Earlier reports indicated concern about the liberty call in Vietnam.
Copying you on this Swordmaker, as you had asked about more info on the letter and the facts surrounding it.
Most likely.
The letter was fine up to here:
” I am entirely convinced that your Commanding Officer loves you, and that he had you at the center of his heart and mind in every decision that he has made. I also know that you have great affection, and love, for him as well....”
WHAT? Touchy Feely or what?
The probable reason the captain was relieved was exactly because he was too Touchy Feely.
More Touchy Feely is not the proper response.
Do it because you were ORDERED to do it. Because of the RESPECT for superiors REGARDLESS of personalities.
The “captain” (regardless of rank) of the ship is THE CAPTAIN OF THE SHIP! PERIOD! (Until he isn’t.)
He doesn’t want your “love”. He SHOULDN’T! What do you think this is... Jr. High!
THIS IS WAR! Like the the Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas B. Modly said We are not at peace. We NEVER are.
The “military bearing” in this captain and in his crew was lacking.
After reading most of the letter, I agree that the captain acted poorly and against orders. He should have been relieved of his command. It was the right thing to do.
Absolutely, what is hard to understand is how this man got this far. Something is wrong with a system that didn’t weed out this sort of individual.
He will be a quest on the View.
What would Admirals Nimitz or Halsey do?
Cozier is a look into what our future military is becoming, just look at what fellow navy seals did to their Chief officer Galleger!! Cozier was the Commanding officer of a NUCLEAR WAR SHIP he let all of our enemies know his ship was not combat ready what an absolute pansie!! OMG how in the hell did he ever get the position in the first place!! I sincerely fear for our future military!!
Gee, I seem to recall someone else doing that...
Just how well paid was this “captain” to permit sailors to have leave in a country where this virus is? How well paid “was he for his efforts”?
All it took was ONE infection, who could then talk to n people.
He jumped the chain of command and in publicly revealing a potential weakness in the ability of his ships ability to complete its mission he endangered this Nation.
The mission comes first...always and without exception and this fool of a Captain ought to have known that. He deserves a General Court Martial and reduction in rank to seaman along with being given the boot via a DD.
Yes, but the someone else that did that was protected. This guy wasn’t.
The letter was sent over non- secure, unclassified email ..
Gee, I seem to recall someone else doing that...

A buddy of mine recently retired from the army as a Lt Col. I asked his opinion today about this.
It was essentially the same.
