Microsoft founder Bill Gates has called for a nationwide shutdown in an effort to combat the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus.
The Hill reports that Microsoft founder and billionaire philanthropist has called on a nationwide lockdown of the United States in an op-ed in the Washington Post. Gates states that he has spoken with experts through his charity who have stated that national policy would be more effective than multiple states issuing stay-at-home others while others remain open. Gates argues that the country needs a consistent nationwide approach to shutting down.
Gates writes in the op-ed: Despite urging from public health experts, some states and counties havent shut down completely. In some states, beaches are still open; in others, restaurants still serve sit-down meals.
This is a recipe for disaster. Because people can travel freely across state lines, so can the virus. The countrys leaders need to be clear: Shutdown anywhere means shutdown everywhere, he added. Until the case numbers start to go down across America which could take 10 weeks or more no one can continue business as usual or relax the shutdown.
Gates also stated that while a vaccine for the virus could be available within 18 months, creating a vaccine is only half the battle. Gates wrote: We can start now by building the facilities where these vaccines will be made. Because many of the top candidates are made using unique equipment, well have to build facilities for each of them, knowing that some wont get used.
He added: Private companies cant take that kind of risk, but the federal government can. Its a great sign that the administration made deals this week with at least two companies to prepare for vaccine manufacturing. I hope more deals will follow.

I have never been a Gates/MS hater. Neither have I been a fanboy. I’ve just never given a damn about the guy one way or the other.
That said, this proposal from a multi-billionaire who will personally suffer little if at all from the economic devastation of his proposal is 100% Pure Idiocy.
You cannot keep this economy on ice for much longer than is currently proposed without creating The Great Depression 2.
As President Trump has said, this country was not built for that. We are the United States of America. Not, the cowering, snowflake, socialist nanny states of America.
There truly is a point where the cure can be far worse than the disease.
Exactly the wrong thing to do.
The right things to do:
- Deploy masks and sanitizer on emergency basis, with guidance and warnings. It’s already a crime to spread disease carelessly.
- Articulate and refine whom is quarantined. Young people having no contact with older people should be able to go back to work, and to bars, restaurants and all kinds of gatherings.
Completely? That’s what he said. He’s a smart man. He knows what completely means.
He has enough money to tide him over. We don’t. The country is operating at about 1/4 capacity, which will lead to a recession or depression.
I applaud those individuals who went to work for grocery delivery companies, and services like Grubhub, who are working for what looks like very little money and some personal exposure to danger.
How much do you want to bet he is nominated to become head of the United Nations or a position similar to that?

Excellent point. We have places in this country that have yet to see one case in their county last I checked. We have places like New York that have thousands of cases. You cannot treat New York like a royal county in the west with no cases or vice versa. Decisions have to be made based on the conditions in need of each area. A one size fits all approach is doomed to fail from the start.
lets donate your billions back in direct payments to the citizens, billy boy....start there...
Must be nice to advocate for a complete national shut down not sure what thats exactly supposed to mean, do grocery stores stay open, do you auto repair shop stay open so nurses can get to work, etc. When you were sitting on piles of cash and dont have to worry about paying your bills or putting food on the table etc.
Quarantine those pestholes and the rest of us can get back to work.
The Gates foundation, John Hopkins, and WHO jointly war-gamed this pandemic October 18, 2019 - weeks before "patient zero".
Before it gets taken down.
Easy for a billionaire to say.
Bill Gates said... Joe Biden said... Oprah Winfrey said... In other news. President Trump is leading forty five major companies, such as Fed Ex and Proctor and Gamble.
except he doesn’t get his own kids vaccinated...
Depleted Uranium has had the highly fissionable isotopes removed leaving only u-238 which I think is almost valueless as a fuel. When used as an anti tank projectile it leaves behind a toxic dust which kills mostly by heavy metal poisoning, although I think some radiation cancers are caused by u-238 dust inhaled into the lungs. U-238 by itself has a four and a half billion year half life.
I do not dislike Bill Gates, but he is not nearly as smart as he thinks he is.
What does his stimulus package look like?
“We can start now by building the facilities where these vaccines will be made”
You have proof of that? Just would like to cite that elsewhere
I loathe and despise Bill Gates.
Well as much as I can with out paying attention to him these days.
But I followed his rise in the eighties, and the ways he made his money then so it follows that I have no stomach for the old scallawag now.
Probably most people who read Byte or Ziff Davis’s PC Magazine or various legal journals back then feel the same way
My 90 year old mom lives in my home I am 66 and I go out everyday to help my neighbors with shopping ect. I am washing my hands, sanitizing the shopping cart handles I have a jogging suit in the garage when I come home each day I pull into the garage change into the jogging suit come in wash my hands and we have been just fine!!! I live in CA. we have a population of 40 million with 6,500 cases, my county population is 900,000 and we have 104 cases!! I personally believe this whole damn thing has been completely overblown and I would expect the numbers to be very high in NY as it would be with any other illness!!
