Coronavirus: It's time to get real about the misleading data
The Hill ^ | 04 01 2020 | Keith Naughton

There is no doubt about it: The numbers are just not right. Whether diagnosed cases, deaths, projections, much of the data you see about the coronavirus is misleading — it’s just a matter of how far off the numbers really are.

How the data on coronavirus is presented and discussed is a serious problem, as efforts to contain the pandemic — and support for those efforts — are based on the math of transmission. Far-reaching public policy decisions are made based not only on data but on public demands as shaped by the data presented to the public. The public needs to know the truth to have confidence in those policy decisions — even if the truth means that there is a great deal of uncertainty which will not be resolved for some time.

Fundamentally, the problem is that people — and the news media — don’t like uncertainty and demand exact answers even when there are none to be had. The result too often is bad numbers, bad reporting and a disillusioned public when the numbers turn out to be off-base.

Let’s tackle four of the current data and analysis problems.

The number of actual cases is far higher than the number of 'confirmed cases'

China is lying

Statistical model results are badly misunderstood

Does not help that Fauci and Birx parade around charts and graphs purporting to show exact answers when, if you parse their words, it's clear they have no certainty either.

It’s impossible that we would have accurate numbers with something that started so recently.

If only our leaders/experts/media put as much emphasis on finding a cure, as they do attempting to predict outcomes.

Where are the numbers for new tests/trials/treatments?

Only one person continues to speak about these: DJT

People need to hear from the rain makers...

Though they would have been a lot more accurate if the CDC had been doing its JOB instead of holding seminars on Gender Bias in Gun Violence Statistics in Honolulu.

Well, here we go. I just got a call from my girlfriend. She’s positive for Corona Virus.
...........
She has had a bad stomach flu last week, no coughing, no temperature, just severe nausea.
..........
She called her doctor last week about being tested, they said not to worry, don’t come in. I told here the same thing. She didn’t have the symptoms.
............
She went to a mobile test station yesterday because she said that she has never had such nausea.
............
They just called, she’s positive. She feels absolutely fine, appetite is back, everything.
..............
She is an essential state employee, the government has insisted she come to work for the last 2 weeks while she has been sick.
.............
She works on a big office, lots of contact. They closed the office this morning. Evidently two other co-workers have tested positive also.
............
God only knows how many have been infected.

THERE’S A BETTER THAN 75% CHANCE THIS COULD WIPE OUT AT LEAST 30-50% OF THE POPULATION OF THE US!

RUN! SCREAM! HIDE!

GO TO THE STORE, BUY MORE DRIED FRUITS AND NUTS, LOAD UP ON THE CLOROX AND HOLD OUT IN YOUR BASEMENT!

MAYBE SOME OF YOU WILL SURVIVE AND BE ABLE TO CARRY ON!

The only number that will eventually matter in this country is how many death are we willing to accept? People are going to die, nothing is going to stop that. What we have to do now is come up with the numbers necessary to produce a trade off. We can’t stay shutdown indefinitely and once we go back to work people will continue die. So how many bodies are the American electorate willing to accept to return to ‘normalcy’

The shut down is theory that I can prevent deaths. Like I said it is a theory. My contention we can isolate and keep the death rate to min WITHOUT KILLING THE ECONOMY.

You’d think officials there would have been eager to get people tested, especially essential employees, seeing as Washington has been a hot spot.

I guess just another gov’t bureaucracy reinforcing the idea that they can’t do anything right except by accident. Well here’s wishing your gf a quick recovery.

Last Friday was the first time that I could put a name to someone with Covid. A friend’s first cousin had run a fever for four days, followed by a dry cough. She was examined at a hospital, given antibiotics and sent home. Her tests came back positive for Covid-19 and she’s now in a Covid hospital ward. 49 yr old from a big latino family. There are plenty of at risk people from this one patient. Guess we will get to see if exponential expansion actually occurs.

Geez, she told me she thought a couple of co-workers didn’t look good.
............
The problem is what to do about “essential” employees. First responders, health care, emergency management.
..............
When we’ve had shut down snow storms, the state sent a police car to get her to work. No options.
................
I don’t know how to stop it from breaking out through people that are ordered to work.

"The only number that will eventually matter in this country is how many death are we willing to accept? "

Well, seeing how approximately 2.8 million people died in the US in 2017, I ask sarcastically what is another 250,000? Of course any loss of life is tragic and effort must be put forth to minimize the contagion, yet I do not want to see my grandchildren grow up in a 1930's-40's depression and war scenario. Especially one that may be artificially contrived. Then again given lack of verifiable stats out of China, maybe the flubros will be dead wrong. We just do not know.

“Dude, what’s wrong with you?”

Nothing is wrong with him. He is laughing at the freakin’ pearl clutching hysterics populating the once thoughtful FR.

And they deserve being laughed at. I wish I could see more of it as everyday we see the projections steadily drop as the “experts” finally figure out how stupid they have been with their gloom and doom mostly uninformed guesswork projections.
