Deborah Birx: 'Disappointing' that half a million coronavirus tests not being utilized
Washington Examiner ^ | March 31, 2020 | By Tim Pearce

More than 500,000 coronavirus test kits are lying unused around the United States.

“It is disappointing to me right now that we have about 500,000 capacity of [tests] that are not being utilized," Birx said. "They are out. They are in the states. They are not being run and not utilized."

Birx said that much of the confusion is due to changing processes of getting medical test kits to the states. State officials, comfortable with the earlier processes, are missing kits because they are unfamiliar with the new procedures or recent updates.

"So, now we have to figure out how do we create awareness because, sometimes, when you put an early platform out, … people get dependent on that and then don't see that there's availability of other tests," Birx said. "So, right now, there are over half a million tests that are sitting, capacity, that are not being utilized."

You would think that they would be looking into an inventory every day. If the states are not, then they’re just plain negligent....like Cuomo.

Testing produces one result....the rise of new cases because that's what they are testing for....people ONLY with symptoms.

I believe these tests are self analyzing...no lab necessary.

Back in the Stone Age when I worked in the Lab. we had to do a comparative study between new test kits and previously established test kits before the new test kit could be put online. This included something as simple as UCG kits, the same kit anybody can buy at CVS. CLIA regulations.

Upstate NY doesn’t seem to be testing much.

Up here the testing criteria are: You have to be symptomatic AND have had contact with someone who’s tested positive in the last 14 days.

That really limits testing.

Trump has not during the crisis gone to war with the medical branch of the deep state - NIH/CDC/FDA. That may have been and still is a politically good move. Shifting leadership of those agencies in the crisis would have sent a shit load of mad bureaucrats straining to help the Dims and hurt Trump. But when the crisis period is over, and before November, some heads should roll.

Yes, except here it would have been ONE state representative calling, or maybe one person for each county; after a day the state would say “Hey, we should have one person collect the information from each lab, and put it on a web site, and the counties and private businesses could check that.”

Or, they could all wait around for the feds to say “Hey, we sent X units to lab A, Y to lab B, and Z to lab C”.

Then they’d still have to call to see who was using them. Or they could wait for the feds to collect information from EVERY lab in the country, and compile it into some list, and then make that list available to every place in the country that wants to do a test.

It makes zero sense for this to be a federal job. THe feds should be taking orders from labs “We are down to 2 day supply at our current rate”, and then they send out another week’s supply. That’s it.

I saw that. And in Maryland they are setting up drive-thru testing, but you need a good reason, AND you need to make an appointment to drive thru.

Hopefully, in the next few days the 15-minute test will start showing up in the medical offices around the country, so your Patient First can do a test and tell you in 15 minutes.

There are no excuses that one can make. Somebody has to take the blame. The buck, as we all know, stops somewhere. I am glad you agree.

I think our agenda has to be the alleviation of the current situation, and all missteps that slowdown the responses. We all can agree that testing ramp-up has been a weak spot. Let us resolve to fix any and all issues from the top down.

It is an axiom of leadership competencies, that in a crisis, top-down leadership, command-and-control directives are the most effective. Not a decentralized empowerment-based leadership, which is fine in normal times.

Sure in no danger of being used in oklahoma. If they want a safe warehouse for them, send them here. Easy to claim her few cases you have when you don’t test
