IRS releases more info on how to get coronavirus stimulus checks ASAP

New information from the IRS on Monday shines more light on what people can do to get their checks from the government as quickly as possible while many families worry about paying the bills and buying food during the coronavirus crisis, which has cost millions of people their jobs.

For Americans eligible for stimulus cash under the new relief law, the fastest way to receive it is to make sure they've filed a tax return for 2019 or 2018 with bank information so the government can deposit the money directly.

The IRS says it will use people's 2019 returns to calculate eligibility and automatically send the money to those who qualify. If they haven't filed a 2019 return, it'll be based on the 2018 return...

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said payments will go out "within three weeks" for people who have their direct deposit information on file with the IRS.

I lost my job due to restructuring in February 2020, just before all he'll broke loose with Corona

The payments going out now are advance payments on a 2020 credit.

When you do your 2020 taxes, you may get additional credit, or have to give back, based on where you are with respect to the cutoff amount.

Thanks upchuck. To make these stimulus checks 'revenue neutral', I suggest an immediate 99% tax on the assets of all entertainment industry nitwits.

According to that article the IRS may have no regard for the law.

It also my initial understanding that eventually checks would be mailed if the IRS does not have direct deposit info. I don’t see any mention of that on their site. Basically the IRS is not communicating very well at all. Maybe they have no idea what they are doing.

My daughter has not filed a return in many years. She does get an SSI check deposited into her checking account on the 1st of every month. I wonder how/when she might get her stimulus check?

Same here, $350, but I got back $455 in state, tweaked deductions to break even, it’s my money every paycheck, every week, and uncle Sam has to squeeze it out of me.

Maybe they (IRS) have no idea what they are doing.

You nailed it!

Well, I just did the income taxes this evening, and the e-file has been “accepted”. Experience in past years says my $486 overpayment will be returned to me in short order. Anything else I get will go into the contingency fund, whenever it gets here.

Here’s the rest of the article that might address your concerns:

The IRS said Americans who weren’t required to file taxes in the last two years will have to file a “simple tax return” with basic information like filing status, number of dependents and bank information so the government can send the money.

“Low-income taxpayers, senior citizens, Social Security recipients, some veterans and individuals with disabilities who are otherwise not required to file a tax return will not owe tax,” the IRS said.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said payments will go out “within three weeks” for people who have their direct deposit information on file with the IRS.

“We will create a web-based system for people where [if] we don’t have their direct deposit [information], they can upload it so that they can get the money immediately as opposed to checks in the mail,” Mnuchin said Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

There’s also a government link omnibus page that additional programs which might affect you in othe regards.

SSI and SS retirement checks will be issued. The IRS will use your benefits letter as the determining factor (and if you’re making over 80 grand a year on SS, are ya married? wanna be? LOL!)

The amount the judge allowed me to have out of MY pension was so low I didn't owe taxes. All I'd paid though the year will be refunded. My 2020 taxes will be the same situation unless that ex dies and I'm allowed to keep the pension I earned.

Even if the call this $1200 a credit on my 2020 tax I'll still be below the taxable income. Should be interesting.
