CDC guidance on masks remains under development, the federal official said. The official said the new guidance would make clear that the general public should not use medical masks including surgical and N95 masks that are in desperately short supply and needed by health-care workers.
Instead, the recommendation under consideration calls for using do-it-yourself cloth coverings, according to a second official who shared that thinking on a personal Facebook account. It would be a way to help flatten the curve, the official noted.
Such DIY cloth masks would potentially lower the risk that the wearer, if infected, would transmit the virus to other people. Current CDC guidance is that healthy people dont need masks or face coverings.

WaPo, so probably fake and designed to sow discord.
Have people quit dying from the flu???
We never hear any deaths from the flu anymore....
Follow the money...
The CDC is estimating deaths as high as 60K in the USA this season.
They had to make sure it spread real good before coming up with this. The Chinese Disease Commission strikes again.
Doesn’t work if you don’t cover your eyes, too
This whole scene stinks of something sinister
There is absolutely no way to protect every cell of every body of everyone in America one’s whole life
This is the Worst Episode of Dumb and Dumber played out in Real Time
First they told us masks were useless. Then they said they might help and I produced 8 in 8 hours for family medical workers and those of us with other health problems. Now I guess I need to produce at least 22 more for the rest of the family. And that doesn’t include our son-in-law’s three daughters and their kids and SOs. How does one make a mask for an 8 month old?
Talk about busting my quilting stash! I was just getting ready to clean off the dining room table. Sigh.
See 55. Your effort is not wasted. Keep up the good work.
“CDC considering telling everyone they have no clue what to do.”
No, they know what to do. But instead of making fools of themselves, they should be telling us what’s being done to get face mask production started, on the scale needed here, and what is holding it up - environmental/safety regulations, unions, local officials, materials issues, just what? I’m sure there are still people around who know how to make them...why aren’t they trying to find those people - as to materials, if we’re short in areas, how about having people work on finding other options?
Treating us like 3 year olds is really starting to get on my nerves. And they should also consider that fact that anyone who now has a supply of masks is NOT going to give them to the government - so telling people not to wear them, means they’ll just stay in storage (if not in use), until they get around to telling us the truth.
Just doing their part to add to the chaos and confusion.
There is no way that a bandanna isn’t better than nothing.
Yep. This is just a test run for it.
My glasses steam up when I breath.
My daughter had two organ transplants and a very well respected transplant center told her it doesnt help to wear a mask.
The State of Massachusetts had a huge order of masks impounded by the Fed Gov. IOW, yeah.
they dont want the general public to go buy them placing demands on supply but we already had ours from a good year of lead paint scraping. they can get stuffed!
We already gave a high quality $30-40 mask (very intense) and a packet of P-95 masks to an ER doctor that requested them from a community forum.
Masks are cool....think Batman, the Lone Ranger, Zorro....plus, mask flirting is the new Disco bump!
Something else you can’t find at any store.
Oh man, do NOT tell that to some FReepers on this thread!!

“Like another freeper said, at some point they dropped the P from their acronym.”
...and added a “G”.
About F ing time.
Only idiots believed the masks dont work Propaganda
“Have they considered the fact that a considerable portion of our society wont keep these things clean and will accumulate huge concentrations of virus in their masks?”
Not really an issue for most people, as they only get a dusting, at most, and then the virons die off in a few days (also, at most). In a hospital...different story, of course.
