NEW YORK -- Macy's, Kohl's and Gap Inc. all said Monday they will stop paying tens of thousands of employees who were thrown out of work when the chains temporarily closed their stores and sales collapsed as a result of the pandemic.
Macy's said the majority of its 125,000 employees will be furloughed this week and that it is transitioning to an "absolute minimum workforce" needed to maintain basic operations. Macy's said it has lost the bulk of its sales due to the temporarily closing of more than 600 stores starting March 18.

I use the analogy of the connect the dots thing in those children’s puzzle books. It boggles my mind that the media.. all media, has been exposed in the last four years to be the Democrat propaganda machine. Of course, most of us here have known this fact for the majority of our lives. So, now we are to all fall in line believing what is being pushed by the very same people? It just amazes me how this can actually be sold as a crisis pandemic, when in fact it’s just a less deadly form of the flu that we’ve seen in the past ten years. Anyway, I appreciate your comment as it reassures me that common sense is out there. Thanks!
The internet killed magazines also. In the 90’s I used to hit the bookstore twice a month and buy $40-50 worth of my favorites and never paid over $5 for one.
All that ended around 2000 when internet content along the same interests become prolific.
The Coronavirus has just sped up the inevitable in a lot of areas.
One of the impacts could be Contraction in Sports with some franchies unable to survive. Even College Sports may take a hit.
Going forward think of what happens to dining out when people who never had to cook before learn how out of necessity. And how they will respond when they see how much they saved on their debit card statement and credit card bills by not going out.
There are going to be fundamental changes to culture/society if this goes on long enough.
My wife and I just discussed this when she said that all of the frozen foods at the sto were all gone. People are going to have to learn to cook or wait in line at a drive-through. Or Uber Eats.
The break that Amazon got for so many years by encouraging people to buy stuff without sales tax will eventually result in a single monopolistic company heavily taxed by a more totalitarian government.
Macy’s, Kohls and Gap have been at death’s door for several years. Last time I went to any of them it was the same...crappy product that looked like it wouldn’t survive the washer and all the racks looked they’d been pawed through by crazed raccoons. Also useless employees...when I could find one.
This is an about face for me ... three weeks ago I was expecting the world to inflate their way out.
I just got back from Walmart.
The shelves were all stocked. It wasn’t too crowded. There was bread and pet food and supplies.
Walmart and maybe Target will be the new brick and mortar stores. There are times when you need a brick and mortar store or perhaps just want to push a shopping cart and feel what you’re buying.
But a Kohls? A Sears? Even shopping malls? Especially a Macy’s, which brings nothing to the equation except maybe that parade.
Around vacation resorts there might be little boutique brick and mortar....they fit in there.
But home delivery is much more efficient, easier to take time and choose product, easy to get to your front door via FedEx guy.
Nobody’s going to Macy’s to buy a skirt and blouse.
Except maybe if going to a parade.
We’re all going to be working for Amazon.com when this is over, LOL!
That HCQ/Zinc/Zpak hasn’t been seized on and rolled out globally on a breakneck, emergency basis is all the evidence I need that this is an op.
Nothing more.
It’s not a laughing matter.
I’d work for Amazon so long as I can work from home.

It will be interesting to see how Obamacare handles the layoffs. If people lose their jobs, they can signup for coverage. With this nasty bug on the loose, I think it is imperative to have coverage. Since this happened early in the year, some people would be forced into Medicaid.

But then, I’m part of the Nut-Job Conspiracy Ping list.
Every company is going to be doing this if they are closed. The CV relief bill didn’t give business money to pay workers, but if they lay them off, the workers get normal unemployment PLUS $600 a week, which might be more than what they make at Kohls.
Why wouldn’t the company do this, it takes all the burden off, they don’t pay insurance, and when things start up, they should have a lot of prospects since millions of people will be out of work — that is, after 4 months, since who is going back to work when they are making more money sitting in their house?
