COLUMBUS, Ohio In a quick about-face, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, responding to criticism from Gov. Mike DeWine, has granted expanded approval for a new device developed by an Ohio research firm that sterilizes the protective masks used by health-care workers.
The FDA on Sunday night issued an amended approval order, revoking a Saturday order that only permitted Battelle to use the device at its headquarters in Columbus, and only to clean 10,000 masks per day. The limited order angered DeWine, leading him to rebuke the agency publicly Sunday morning and seek intervention from President Donald Trump. Before the limited order, Battelle had planned to immediately deploy to New York City its new technology, which it said could clean up to 160,000 masks a day in Ohio alone.

We don’t want to short all those companies now charging $5.00 per mask when the same masks a month ago cost only 95 cents.
The FDA cannot be trusted.
The unwritten hero of this pandemic will be Trump cutting through all the bureaucracy and bringing gov’t and the private sector together in a more timely response than could ever have been possible under the outdated, socialistic system we currently have in place.
I agree, and have said the same to my wife.
We are learning a lot about artificial gridlock by absurd regulations. This is an emergency - we are short on masks - if we can clean and reuse masks, why on earth would we not utilize that technology immediately? Stupid!
Oh - and reduce, reuse, recycle.
I don’t mean to insult experts, but what’s that difficult about cleaning a face mask. Wash it with soap, rise, soak for awhile in hydrogen peroxide, rinse, let dry overnight.
TV news showed some goodhearted seamstresses making masks out of ordinary cloth.
I saw the following a couple of different places:
160 degree-200 degree oven 30 minutes.
I wonder if enclosed container with ozone would work? I use ozone generator in many different applications. Kills everything.
” whats that difficult about cleaning a face mask. Wash it with soap, rise, soak for awhile in hydrogen peroxide, rinse, let dry overnight.”
“160 degree-200 degree oven 30 minutes.”
We can’t do THAT! We have to do years of clinical studies and wait for FDA approval. /s
Another Alphabet with entrenched bureaucrats too concerned with their own selves than the public interest
Much in need in a housecleaning
Obviously if they can clean 160,000 masks per day that has to be a big advantage then cleaning a few in an oven every 30 minutes. Unless Cuomo can commandeer every pizza oven in the NYC to do this work. But then he would complain about having to pay the power bills...
Oh - and reduce, reuse, recycle.
Geez, you must be an old goat like me, 81+ and my soon to be 80 year old wife.
We call most of what you describe in the new lingo re-purposing.
Enjoy, how to make your own mask. :)

I suggest Trump assign the “get out of the way” crowd to a base in Antarctica.
Yep - from what I have read, ozone will kill viruses. Curious as to why they don’t just lay out the masks in a smallish room and turn on the ozone generator for a couple of hours. Very cheap, very inexpensive, apparently very effective. The ozone returns to O2 after a short time - no fuss, no muss, no waste.
UVC folks. Not to be confused with UVA and UVB in sunlight. UVC can destroy a virus or other cellular material in an instant. Don’t try it at home, it’s dangerous stuff if you’re exposed to it. It’s used in air handlers of laboratories to sanitize the coils and air going through them.
“I wonder if enclosed container with ozone would work?”
Might work but hospitals might not have them on hand.
What about the bed linens and towels they wash and presumably sterilize by the ton? Steam?
The medical profession like most of us is used to throwaway items. My father once carried a cloth handkerchief that mama washed.
...hospitals might not have them on hand.

Mine cost $89. Over a couple of hours, it clears 2 good sized rooms. If it was directed into an enclosed container, I bet it would kill any living/semi-living cell in an hour.
You just need to make sure nothing that is breathing is in the same space.
